You need a win98 start up disk. Since you don't have the cd, you can't make one. I thought that I saw one on the web somewhere that you could download, might want to search if you can. DOS will not be able to see all 4gb of that drive. The most it can handle is partitions of 2gb

Learn how to make a Boot Disk..

And Boot Disk is Diff. than a start up disk.

              Too late now I think'ie...

If and when you learn how to make a Boot Disk...
don't forget to put your CD driver on it and boot with it....make sure you can get to your CD drive...

Grab something like partition magic, there's a couple sharewares out there that do the same thing. They'll let you get into your system and make it recognize the lost partition.

R3K wins the prize on this thread ....

All you need to do is boot using the win98 startup floppy ... from the DOS prompt type in 'FDISK', and reconfigure your partitions.

                    very simple procedure

Also, any of the proprietary floppy disks packaged with hard drives these days can do the job, too.

If you know who made your drive then download their tools from the website and use that disk to erase your drive. This takes longer to do for a Seagate drive than Maxtor, Western Digital or IBM.

You should be good to go after a full erase.

                                        bunky,

If you have lost your partition, you will have to run fdisk. Once inside fdisk, view your partitions as you may now have only one partition. You will have to delete that main partition and create new ones.

                                        THE KEY IS FDISK.

partition magic is the best to use

fdisk will not read the complete disk

somehow it wasnt formatted to dos
and fdisk uses dos to read the drive size

on second thought i think there are freeware programs that linux gurus use to partition there hard drives and you can specify to turn the drive back to a dos partition, but i havent touched linux in a few years
