    Heart Palpitations Are Scary :(

I just had some and almost passed out. I have been to a cardiologist and Im fine. He says its a slight case of mitral valve prolapse but its benign and nothing to worry about. Plus out of 100,000 heart beats in 24 hours i only had 300 irregular. MY dad and uncle in the past have had electrical issues but they are still alive and fine today. Just sucks dealing with it. Causes anxiety and panic attacks at times also. Doctors tell me and I have read all about it. Anyway, share if you experience this also. Im 29. I heard its bad in your 20's. I have haad it for 4 years now.

I think that anything involving your heart is going to make you freak out. I had some teeth pulled this past summer and was given epinephrine which apparently speeds up your heartbeat... I was totally freaking out.

Are there any exercises or medications you need to follow for treatment or maintenance?

No, they gave me xanex which i only take if I really need it. I use to play semi professional tennis after college ball and since I have been trying to run again and do more exercise. Exercise helps most of the time but sometimes I get it also during. It all depends.

hmm interesting, You're hardly overweight, no different than most these days I think. Sucks that you've inherited such a shitty problem, but if your dad has em and is fine after all his years, I bet you'll be dandy too

I get those alot too, and missed beats.... it seems the more I think about them the more they happen, and if I feel something and then take my pulse I usually freak myself out because my heart will skip a beat and then it is hard not to feel a little touch of panic inside.

I'm in great shape too so it isn't a fitness issue.

That is all i can hope for. Also my cardiologist says its fine and im healthy. When i get these to just do my best and relax. As long as im not getting any chest pain, heard to breath and arm pain im ok. Those are signs of a heart attack.

I get them once or twice a month, I'll die someday and I'd rather die from a heart attack than from wasting away shitting a bed for years.

Yup you nailed it. I get tons of skips and it feels like my heart almost stops, then goes again by it slowing down. Scary thing is man, is now that i think of it constantly and get them as well, I have a hard time sleeping because im always paying attention to my heart beat etc. It drives me mad. Its true that your brain can do some very powerful things.

exactly... breathing is kind of the same thing, you don't want to really think about it, especially when you are falling asleep

Dude, get into doing yoga. I have lost a ton of flab from doing bikram's hot yoga. I also run and do weights too, however.

I've also had problems with stress related heart issues. My heart has been skipping beats on and off since I was about 17, and occasionally palpitations for 20-30 seconds max. It's been looked at a couple of times but there's never been anything conclusive. It all came to a head about a year ago when the occasional palpitations didn't stop after 30 seconds. I was feeling dizzy and clammy. I didn't think it was a heart attack but I wasn't going to mess around, I woke my wife and told her to call an ambulance. They quickly determined it wasn't a heart attack (the medic suggested it was a panic attack) and later in the hospital after several tests they also concluded that they couldn't find anything wrong.

So I was sent back home, but things seemed to be worse... I was trying to sleep but every time my heart skipped a beat then thumped hard (almost to compensate) I would literally jump, my body would spasm as if someone had given me a shock. I went back to hospital and stayed overnight for observation. It was there that someone FINALLY explained to me what an eptopic (sp?) beat was, that an occasional missed beat or weird beat is relatively normal and nothing to worry about.

From that point on it was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. I realised that a lot of it was in my subconsious mind, the stress levels (and therefore the reaction) were increased by me freaking out about it. After a day or two things settled down and since then I might only notice an irregular beat a few times a week.

I don't know if it's going to be that simple for you but I urge you to work on the stress related part, see if you can talk to someone who can explain things and reassure you, perhaps look at relaxation techniques.

Typing out text like this 2 years ago would have made me very nervous and my heart would have been going crazy.

                                    Good luck!

                                        I'm a pro at them.

                                        2 hospital stays...ambulance ride......etc....etc....etc...

Hit me when I was 27 or so...and cleared up when I was about 30. My brother is 3 yrs younger and when he hit 27 BAM...exact same thing....same EKG....everything...and his stopped at 29....

They suck...after a while they cause panic attacks...I used to have to leave meetings for really no reason other than getting teh fuck outta there!! And luckily its not an issue now. So look towards the future...they will clear up....

38 now..and get an odd beat once and a while and doesn't matter ;-)

If you want to take the edge off the symptoms, supplement the following:
Vitamin C (at least 1,000mg/day) - helps to control stress hormones
Magnesium (about 400mg/day) - muscle relaxant and vasodilator
Fish Oil - reduces inflammation in the body and regulates the heartbeat
Lecithin Granules (1-2 tablespoons/day) - helps to keep your neurotransmitters in balance

I would also throw in a good multi-vitamin/mineral that contains plenty of B vitamins, if you're not already taking one. MVPS is very closely tied to anxiety disorders. Exercise, adequate sunlight, and a healthy diet which minimizes stimulants (like caffeine) all have strong anti-anxiety effects. Last but not least, get plenty of sleep (8-9 hours, if you can). Much good luck.

^ In addition to the above, it may help to figure out if there are any activities or foods which trigger episodes. I found that a particular brand of iced tea (?!) made my heart race and therefore made me more conscious of it (which of course elevated the stress levels, leading to other things happening). Now that I'm over it I can drink it again, but things like coke or sprite still have an obvious effect.

How are they able to tell exactly how many beats were bad out of the total in a 24hr period?

I had the same problem for 25 years and it sucks. I also had to get cardio shocked one time and another time they sent me to the ICU for three days. What finally worked was Fish Oil, a Calcium Blocker and a Beta Blocker.

Every time I get an EKG they think I'm having a heart attack because it look like I am but it's just normal for me.

The docs told me about 10 years and 100 pounds ago "Not" to exercise because it would kill me.

There is a 24 hour monitor they can hook up to you that will show exactly how many beats were bad out of the total in a 24hr period. Every time I've wore it everything was normal ?

The beta blocker is the magic bullet !

Wow! I can definitely relate. I had quadruple bypass surgery in July and am still recovering. I don't have the same thing that you have, but most palpitations are not serious, but if your symptoms are due to an arrhythmia, it is best that you keep seeing your doctor. I'll send positive thoughts your way.

                                                          Yep. Very.

When I was drinking, I used to get them all the time. I would even go into B-Fib a day or two after a bender and would have to go to the ER and get cardio-verted to get back on a normal rhythm.

I remember being terrified the first half dozen or so times. But I eventually got to the point where I could control my adrenaline, and still can now. For like when I go on a roller coaster or something. You learn to calm yourself down after enough times. I remember sitting in a waiting room HOURS before I would get cardioverted and you are in a panic, cold sweats, and mind is racing.

It is easily one of the most unnerving things ever.

Pics or it didn't happen. Similar thing Happened to me a couple months ago too.

I felt anxious & panic , but had no reason to. I work out; and was about to go for a walk to ease the anxiety; strapped on the heart monitor, and Heart Rate was 155.

I checked my BP, and that was normal; but pulse didn't go down after 20 minutes.

So, I went to the clinic, they said I was in fibrulation, and called the ambulance.

after a couple hours of monitoring; still no change - they sent down the cardiologist.

They did a sonogram of my heart, and explained the process of re-setting the beat via the de-fibrulator.

So, they had to take one more look at my heart to ensure there were no clots; they did that by sticking some probe down my throat. They shot me up with Propyphil (the same drug MJ died from) and re-started my heart.

When I woke up, I found some pics on my phone & had a good laugh.

The final diagnoses was Atrial Fibrulation - fairly common.

I think that I did drink a bit the night before which may have had something to do with it.

                                                              Good luck!

                                                                  Good luck!

Scary thing is man, is now that i think of it constantly and get them as well, I have a hard time sleeping because im always paying attention to my heart beat etc. It drives me mad. Its true that your brain can do some very powerful things.

I would suggest some intense yoga. You'll survive the yoga even though it will be brutal, and you'll make yourself more relaxed afterward, and the time spent doing the yoga is pretty meditative as well and will help with anxiety / emotion that's built up and blocked and that your mind isn't allowing you to see.

I'd suggest some hot yoga / Bikram yoga. 90 minute class in a room heated to 105 degrees + it usually gets hotter. Do it 5 times before you write it off. Can hit me up if you have more questions about it..
