When I joined up with the GFY Army, I figured that was the best approach too.... be myself, without affiliation or alliance, say whatever the fuck is on my mind, point out stupidity whenever & wherever I saw it, and basically just take my chances. I'd rather get banned for something I made a concious decision to do myself than spend eternity with restricted action and closed lip due to some prescribed affiliation protocol.Originally posted by Thumbelina

So far it seems to be working out just fine for me. Sure, lots of people would prefer I die this morning and never come back.... but I look at that as a benefit rather than a downside.

The way I see it, as long as a man speaks the truth in an attack, debate, or argument, you sort of have to have a "I don't care" attitude going into it and not worry about who it may or may not piss off during the course of the discussion. That's the only way you ever really get to the meat of an argument. And I don't see any reason why a ban would even be proposed for conducting oneself as such, although it does happen.
I think Lens does a fine job around here of reserving bans for the truly ignorant and malicious. Which is what keeps me coming back every day. If that level of quality policing didn't exist at GFY, I probably wouldn't be here.SIG TOO BIGComment

I hear you AMP, to be an individual is to be unique, witch I dearly treasure but no man is an island ,
through this (horsesh...) I do belive that alliances not necessarily afiliations is one of the keys in becoming established within any industry.

Certainly no man is an island. I didn't mean to infer that. All I ask is to just realize that you need not sell your soul to make it either. People will have far more respect for someone who not only preaches a strong principle, but lives that principle as well. I will admit, I have no doubt it has cost me some business due to misunderstandings or plain old hard feelings about things I may have said. But if that is the price... I can live with that. It's certainly an easier price to pay than the alternative. And I can sleep comfortably at night knowing I have done what I feel is right. Whether that is speaking out on something, or keeping my mouth shut.Originally posted by Thumbelina

In the long run, the payoff is there. I've had people who couldn't stand to see my name on a thread last week, contact me today about doing work. (example there) So, arguing about this or that, or taking down some moron in an attempt to bullshit other webmasters, etc... normally is not a personal thing. In fact, it's very rarely personal. And I'd rather earn that business by way of being what I am, than by kissing someone's ass to get it. If that philosophy fails to serve me in the future, that's when it's time for me to quit.SIG TOO BIGComment

I have this pattern of thought after many disastrous learning *experiences*.... trust me when I say, there is nothing worse than being in bed with a business partner/associate/affiliation/whatever, that you absolutely cannot stand to even talk to. I've collapsed entire businesses and dissolved corporations over this very thing. At the time, it was the only way I could get out of that bed, and dissolving the corporation was, in my view, the lesser of the two evils.
So, it's not like I read a book last week and just decided to be this way. I am the result of alot of different business models and some very nasty experience. And I will not, at any cost, put myself in that position again.SIG TOO BIGComment

anyway, getting back on topic...
"what constitutes an established webmaster HERE"?
Not my board to interpret that, but if I had to offer something up, I would say, one that actively participates in the daily rantings of the board in general. NOT an established webmaster in the biz in general that decides to fly by one day with his latest spam. At least that's how I would interpret it.SIG TOO BIGComment
-
I wouldn't even base it on post count.... but rather, do the people here recognize you as a GFY'r? That's really the measure of it I think.SIG TOO BIGComment

I'd be very interested in hearing Lens' interpretation of what he deems to be an *established* webmaster here.... because without that, it's really all just speculation.SIG TOO BIGComment

I think an established webmaster would be someone who's not a complete joke. Someone who's not too ignorant of the surrounding world, or not someone that thinks they're greater than others, others have to think of them to be established before they are.
I am, for example, not...and I'm off.Comment

This would be cause for great debate, if we were to use someone such as say, Serge, as the example. Many would argue that he is a VERY established webmaster. While in the eyes of others, he is indeed, as you put it, a complete joke and not taken seriously.Originally posted by TeenGodFather

I am, for example, not.
But is he an established webmaster HERE? I would argue no. He flew in, registered a name, and went on with his malicious attacks and spams for whatever reasons. And perhaps it's all in good fun playing up to some inside jokes between him and Lens or whatever... but it doesn't come off that way on the board, and that affects people in bad ways.
Same could be said for BradShaw. I've had many people tell me he's a bigshot in the biz. Does that matter to me? Not much. He's still on my ignore list today. Why? Because of all the malicious attacks in every post he makes. Again, whether that's an inside thing between him and Lens, it's none of my business. And he'll deal with it in whatever way he feels is necessary. All I know is how it affects me when I have to read it. So I choose not too.
But is BradShaw established? As a webmaster... certainly. As a webmaster here? I would say no. He certainly has not earned the respect of anyone by conducting himself as he does, and the only time he posts is when he wants to spam something or try to make Lens look bad. That, in my honest opinion, is a complete waste of board space.SIG TOO BIGComment

It's really not complicated at all. The bottom line is, be truthful, be honest, show respect and get respect, be smart, and participate. It's just that simple. If the only reason for being at GFY is to stir up shit with a particular person (be that the board owner or whoever) or ripoff other webmasters with some bullshit scam, or spam some shitty junk that nobody is interested in anyway, then that person doesn't belong.Originally posted by darksoft

I originally posted this with the thoughts of getting a blatent spam out, but now my curiosty is piqued. I really DO wonder what the criteria would be as determined by the owners of this board and their thoughts on this subject...
Half the time I see something that starts as a thread bearing great thought only to have it turned into random incoherent babblings... I am guilty of that on many occasions :DComment

Well, let's not fool ourselves either. Anyone with half a brain knows full well that certain things are let to slide by, due to factors we may or may not be aware of, such as affiliations or alliances or friendships or what have you. I'm not saying for moment that my idyllic philosophies are able to hold true through things like that when applied in reality, but I do my best to maintain it for myself and my life as best I can, because it keeps me sane and keeps me comfortable with myself from day to day. But more often than not, it simply just doesn't work that way in a practicing environment with so many other people thrown into the mix. So, I'm certainly not wearing blinders either.Originally posted by darksoft

The other thing I think goes along with all this the uncanny ability not to fuck with other peers, and be a man or a woman of their word.
For some it seems that fucking someone over is just the name of the game, to me that is lowest form of behaviour expressed any where.<img src="http://www.12circle.com/banners/bimbo_120x60.jpg"border="0">
Comment

Very true. However, being a man or woman of your word is a concious decision made by each person. You either are, or you are not. Often it does not take long for people to discover which.Originally posted by Thumbelina

Not fucking with peers however, is more of an artform. It takes practice, experience, and a little brainpower to know when you are in the right in fucking with someone and when it's best to just keep it shut and let something play out. This is where many end up making big mistakes. Speaking before you think. Spacedog would be a prime example. I have nothinig personal against the guy, but the CP/ldinternet bit was a classic example of speaking without thought. I'm sure he will overcome it if he has the drive to move forward and do so, but still damaging nonetheless.
And it's not difficult to spot people of this thought pattern. Some take longer to spot, but eventually they are discovered.Originally posted by Thumbelina

One of the biggest reasons for the lack of thought before speaking, IMHO, is the overall lack of maturity in this business. Flame all you like, but I don't know too many industries where 18 yr olds take home as much pay a month as they do in the adult business. And I don't care who you are, at 18 or even in your mid-20's, you simply do NOT have the maturity required to deal with the amount of money you are making and the responsibility of holding positions of power such as a great many do in this industry.
There are exceptions to the rule, granted, but on the whole, the lack of life experience and common courtesy is just not a skill that a lot of webmasters have attained any level of.
I act like a jackass on numerous occasions, more than I am proud of, but at least I know I am acting like a jackass and have the decency to not be proud of it. And I at least try to be a little better about it the next time. Doesn't always work, but I try.Comment

Very good stuff darksoft...
only thing I would add is that, there really is a difference in being a sarcastic smartass whenever you feel like it, and being a malicious asshole at every opportunity. I'm a smartass all day long. But it is done with light attitude and humor intented versus some personal grudge. And that, is what so many self-proclaimed "made-men" in this biz fail to ever understand, and why they do not COMMAND respect from people of intelligence. Instead, they DEMAND respect from everyone based on some statistical number or other completely irrelevant facet of their business. And only the weak will ever respect that.SIG TOO BIGComment

Honest, non smart arse question - Why bother worrying about wether other people think you are so called established?
Firstly in my book being established isn't necessarily the same thing as being well regarded.
I mean, we all have different levels of success we are aiming for and therefore can't be judeged against each other. Some people here have visions of ruling the porn world. There is nothing wrong with that but others of us just want to earn enough to put food on the table. Both of those types can be around for a long time but which one would be considered established?
Me for example, I dont want to be a 'playa'. I want to earn enough to not have to go out of the house to work so that I can look after my disabled husband and put myself through school. I enjoy the building of sites and the marketing and the challenge of getting better at this. It is great to see all that hard work pay off and earn a little bit more each month. Of course, I do hold that little dream in the back of my head that one day I will hit on the perfect formula and will find myself rolling in money.
However, more important to me is that when people see my name they don't think anything overly negative. I would rather be on the lower rungs of this buisness and have people know that I play fair and an a trusted person that is good to work with than be a 'playa' without those things but with lots of money.
So, if the only judgement of being establised is money than fine but I would rather have the other things and not spend my days worrying if others think I am a player.Make 50% commissions promoting our penis pills, breast pills, weight loss pills and more!
