here is a quote from the auction
"Have you watched Matrix, the movie? You know... nothing is at it seems! Well, the same applies to domain names."

as retarded as it sounds I think he is trying to sell some cheap ass domain, xn--ss-jbc.com, saying that it redirects to sos.com when it just shows sos.com in the title and top of the page the cheap domain redirects to.

BTW in IE7 I see an alert saying that the domain name contains characters that cannot be displayed without changing lang settings.

I don't know what he is trying to do but that is what it looked like to me. He wrote "Just copy and paste xn--ss-jbc.com in your browser address bar and watch (upon hiting "enter" or clicking on "go") how xn--ss-jbc.com transforms to sos.com! If your current browser does not allow you to see sos.com in the address bar please upgrade to the new Internet Explorer version 7."

I got IE7 and I did not see sos.com in the address bar, only in the title and top of page of some sedo parking page. Maybe one of the IDN experts around here can enlighten everyone.

From what I understand the English-based domain name encoding will change to a native language format in the address bar. One of the characters probably has an accent over it so it looks like sos.com

IDN are Internationalized Domain Names. They were created to satisfy the needs of ever growing foreign markets whoms language contains characters of non latin origin, such as chinese, japanese, korean, german, turkish, etc, etc.. IDN have been steadily on the rise, both in demand, use & sales.

Certainly something like sos.com as an idn is completely generic & has no potential in reaching value like a 3 char .com, however, IDN of single word or premium search terms ARE extremely valuable if you're doing business to an international market. Chinese, & Japanese IDN for single words such as cars, hotels, etc, have made astronomical dollar amounts when resold.

IDN requires I-Nav plugin from Verisign, which help development of the IDN. Currently, Firefox, & certain versions of IE7 already support IDN. IDN work by taking punycode which is the xn-ss-ora.com like strings you seee, & then mapping them to their native characters in the browser windows, etc.. these native characters are things such as accented latin characters, japanese kanji, chinese language characters, sanskrit, various mathematical symbols, etc, etc.... Also, keep in mind that these foreign countries that utilize the IDN have keyboards & software enabling them to type the native character..
Whereas you & I in the US must hold alt & type 129 to get the character ü , someone in turkey, or germany is capable of typing the character directly from their keyboard. Same goes for any IDN.,, certainly you & I are unable to type the japanese characters directly, so, the punycode is used.. the xn-bb-fgh.com looking domains are actually the punycode, & the domain is what you see..

example.. see below, my own IDN

http://www.bööbs.com Which is the puny code http://xn--bbs-snaa.com/ .. however, what you see in the status bar when you mouse over it is http://www.bööbs.com, not the punycode.. when you click it.. you get http://www.bööbs.com in the address bar, not the punycode.. their is no code on any page to do any of this,, it is IDN mapping to native characters.. Now.. when a visitor is using a browser not capable of mapping, the visitor will see a verisign page giving the visitor the option of downloading I-Nav plugin which will enable their browser for IDN mapping, or the visitor can continue on the the site/domain without downloading & will see the non mapped results. My own example here would show bbs.com because the öö will not be mapped..

                                              http://www.püssy.com
                                              http://www.fück.com

anyway.. I'm looking for link trades for these IDN

                                              any questions?

Thats been going on for a while. I watched the sex.com IDN name go for some big change on ebay last year. People don't think.

Thanks for the info. FYI, in the latest IE7 when I mouse over your domain I see the punnycode in the status bar and when I click it the punnycode is in the address bar? Does one have to have the right language set in ones browser?

Regarding the ebay ad, so basically this guy is advertising it as sos.com when really the o in sos is not really an o but rather another character that looks like an o?

correct, it is not an o.. as far as IE7, i'm not sure,, I know I am on ie6 & I had to dowload the Inav plugin for it to work with me,, I am not sure about language setting for it yet.. considering the characters of my own idn, I assume turkish, german or dutch would work.
