I have lost over a million dollars recently on an investment (Lehman failure).
Didn't even lose any sleep...
It wasn't my whole portfolio so I was grumpy for a day or so perhaps.
I have also made millions from investments and avoided crazy spending sprees.
High Risk / High Reward investing is not for the squeamish.
