What's the deal with everyone saying Cogent's bandwidth is oversubscribed? All the evidence I've seen points in the other direction. Can someone point me to evidence that shows otherwise? All of our customers are happy and about 5 web masters from this board signed up with us in the past week. We offer a balance between quality of service and price to meet the web masters needs.
If I had people knocking down my doorstep to buy expensive bandwidth, I would get some. Also, we have Cogent with Level 3 as a backup. It is a very reliable setup.
Honestly, most of our customers are ISPs and they are doing very well because my prices allow them to make money. Especially the freehosts. We also give the ISPs and resellers their own name servers so their customers do not find out about us.
I could B.S. my customers by putting my front end IPs on some expensive provider like Qwest and then routing their data output through Cogent, but I don't do that. A few of you do, but I don't want to name any names.Last edited by pimpshost; 03-07-2002, 01:24 PM.Comment

I'm a little confused by the ad in your signature on GFY for cologroup.com. It says $100/MBps, but surely it means $100/Mbps?
Also, your message said "all you pay for is bandwidth", but the bandwidth pricing says $100/MBps, but the server cost is $300/month on your website.. Am I missing something?

It is actually $200 for the server and $100 for 1 Mbps of bandwidth. I have it listed as a package for $300.
You also get web based server monitoring that graphs your bandwidth usage, memory usage, CPU usage, and hard disk usage. And the two features our customers find most useful is the remote reboot feature from a browser and watchdog which will restart your server for you if it locks up.

FYI: Cogent is not oversubscribed. They have 2 OC-48's installed in each location which can handle 5 Gbps. The fiber optic lines they are using can be scalled to OC-192 when they upgrade their equipment. Ocassionally when you see odd routing on their network it is done in an effort to balance some of the push pull traffic so they can maintain their settlement free peering relationships. The settlement free peering is how they keep the prices so low.
Also, as far as expensive bandwidth prices, the new technology coming out can increase existing fiber capacity to OC-768, 40 GBps. Take a look at a story on the new technology.
