Locally: What Recession?

Every time I go out to a nice restauant, the mall, casino, sporting event.

Packed.

I am noticing more hard luck stories in the media, and on NPR. But I have to say locally for me. There are not a flood of foreclosures I see when driving around, nor do I see empty malls, Best Buy, or just about any place I go public.

Where is this so called recession exactly? Do you see it around where you live, and it so, to what degree???

Dude, you live in Bumfuck, Michigan, the HEART of the decaying midwest...Of course some restaurants are going to be packed..Doesn't mean some restaurants haven't closed shop......You're not going to "see" foreclosures as Banks don't slap a big FORECLOSURE sign on a house.....But don't even try to say that you don't see a lot of businesses closing up where you are cause you'd be lying.

Last time I was in Vancouver the streets were filled with beggars and it seems quite a few of the storefronts were boarded up, even on the main shopping streets.

So I would say it's visible in some places, and it has hit the common people pretty badly.

While I was saying the same thing not too long ago I have to admit, there are a lot of vacancies in the major malls around here. And that is just from what I see on the outside.

Sure, there are some closings, and sure there are some houses for sale. But there is not a glut of them like talked about on the news. However with a little searching, I can see why to some degree.....

just monitor the paper each day. Actually the public notices page. Watch how few new business are opening, watch the collections notices or auctions. Tons of info for a local view.

I can't stand listening to the doom and gloom daily. Between the bull shit hate monger crap, or the war, or the boo hoos. I catch it here and there from the BBC, and NPR.

Rather take less money via craigslist than deal with all that noise.

We end up selling about 25% of it on average. We donate about 50% more of it. The rest is pure trash - though about 25% of that can be recycled for cash.

Most part yes. But I recently spent more on medical than expected (I was not counting on several emergency surgeries during that visit). Plus I have some more upcoming.

My tax return is fucking funny. I almost can not wait for an audit (yes I actually knocked on wood, and I do not believe in that stuff lol).

I just wish I could see some no pre exisiting condition rules in my life. I would LOVE to be able to get life insurance to protect julia.

The reason you aren't seeing the flood of foreclosures is the banks don't want to write down the loses so they are floating the loans and not letting them out into the market. By not doing so they lessen the damage on the other properties values they hold mortgages on. Locally? My cousin is sitting on a 550k mortgage note on a house now worth $330k (last offer) Of my closest friends all of which have good fulltime jobs two out of three just had to renegotiate their loans or both would have been foreclosed on. The others roommate is moving out (leaving the country) because he can't find work and my friend is concerned he won't be able to keep up with his notes. Another friend who is out of work is riding around on my motorcycle right now because his car broke down and he has no money. My mom has three rental properties and all three renters are behind on their rent and probably should be evicted. I went to the corner market the other day and the owner was trying to sell me his truck because he can't afford the car payment anymore. I could go on and on.

As far as people shopping I just don't see it. The malls are like ghost towns around here. In fact they just turned on into a doctors office complex and trying to figure out what to do with another. As far as restaurants and bars. Those ar eplace where people get out of the house and vent their frustrations. The bars especially are booming during bust economies.

Ask these people what they think.

well depends on the crowd.
They give you a quick peak and close it. If you see say a bike, or yard equipment be ready for a war. Tons of boxes can be gold or copper.

Average cost for a messy unit with boxes in view - 55 bucks (10% added).
Average profit per unit about 200.00 (after paying for clean out, sorting, gas, hauling, and buying it).

However you hit it ever so often. Be it a jewelry box or shitloads of negatives from some wedding photographer. Another odd example, wife of doctor who filled it with patient records that were less than two years old. Did not charge him but he gave us (x2) free weekly chiro visits for a year. Which I explained I would be selling cause I do not use them and he was ok with it. At odd intervals I have done over 5k on a unit that cost 30. Then again I have lost money on a unit that cost 400.00

Very interesting.

I was watching Million Dollar Listing tonight, and it looks like the recession finally hit Malibu. At least in real estate. Watching that show is brutal comedy watching those realtors being handed their balls weekly.

I remember my old business partner, who is big time into real estate, telling me that there is never a recession for high end homes. People who can afford them will buy when they want, and the recessions never play into it.
