I have gone through exactly the same thing recently, having bought a house a few months ago, and was waiting to settle.
I said the same thing to them. In Australia, you only legally have to allow access during the last 14 days of your stay. And they have to be "reasonable". What they and you define as reasonable are often at 2 different ends of the spectrum.
Read your tenancy agreement, and make sure you're there when gumbies look around.
