1 in 32 US adults in jail, on probation, or parole !

We are doing something wrong with those numbers.It cant all be bad apples.

Guessing.. probably half of them relate to drugs stuff and of no value whatsoever keeping folks in jail who have a drugs problem and doing nothing about it.

Sure.. there are genuine drugs problems as well as high end dealing/trafficking etc, - and not saying the latter are not better off locked up - some are dangerous people, not just for drugs. The majority are not violent drugs-related offenses.

It's also easy to critize, but the jail system is fucked beyond belief. It's corrupt from the top down and with the same level of abuse everyone moaned about when Abu Grabhi became public - only difference is it's happening within US borders.

What chance of any progress in that system? Sadly nada.

Rather rot in jail than home with a gold diggn wife/gf. Thats why they hang out at bars do coke, smoke weed, and drive home fucked up and get a DUI.

it's all about the money these days the prisons are money making machines...

do a search for Corrections Corporation of America they are probably one of the biggest private companies profiting from the imprisonment of american citizens

not including all the sub-companies think about things that are needed at the prison and where the moneys go

(laundry service, food distributors, clothing manufacturers and so on...)
the less people they put away the less money all these companies/agencies make...

The solution is more guns, fewer laws and by process of elimination there will be fewer "bad apples".

Thought the bullshit about the "prison factories" had stopped years ago, but suppose where there's a dollar...

May be a bit biased cos I hear the worst side of the US prison system (is there a good side?) - ranging from corrupt management, medical staff theiving the hospital supplies and reselling them outside (one even replaced pills with crap which they dispensed to prisoners), correction facility staff beating up prisoners and the occasional (tho not uncommon) instance of actual torture and where folks die (OK, it's murder).

Then there's the youth facilities where grown men beat up kids and deliberately spray them with... forget the name, but some gas that burns the skin.

Hell.. and not forgetting the officers who rape/assault female inmates - the list of crap is endless. Got a friend who sometimes spends time in jail checking out the background of shit that goes on - if she thinks it's getting dangerous, she assaults (gently) an officer just to be stuffed in solitary. It's safer there.

The background is odd when the shit hits the fan. Officers are often afraid to talk about what they witnessed, else they are sacked or have other pressure dumped on them or their families. It's a shit house.
