Ok, not usually one for plugging hosting companies but this is just too much of an insane deal not to mention...

This company called Servage (Link Here) is offering the following for $9.75 per month.
1: 250GB space
2: 2100GB Traffic
3: Free domain (when prepay 6 months in advance), etc...

And for everyone you refer to them they also give you 2 months free hosting and an extra 25GB of HDD space???
PS: I join them this morning, upped a test file and I get 300kbps download speeds (max bandwidth of my connection) using DAP.

Hits? Why would they care about hits, its bandwidth usage that matters. I don't think they would let you use up 2.1TB and then shut you down if 350,000 people visit a 1kb html file...

Also just as a followup to that, this is from their site: Our hosting package allows 70 GB traffic per day or maximum 2100 GB in a normal 30 day month. A 28 day month allows 1960 GB transfer and a 31 day allows a maximum transfer of 2170 GB.

What those people did probably violated those terms and sent a lot of traffic in one day, so even though it was within the monthly limit it wasn't within a daily one...

uhhhh, its crap... why? same reason with dreamhost, the second you get close to using up that much, you get shut down... why? their plan is to offer HUGE bandwidth/space for VERY little, and get a bunch of people who use a fraction of it, and bank off them, where as they bite dust of the people who actually use it, and then can them for using it...

No, it's not bandwith usage that matters. It's server resources that matter.

This is called overselling. The host crams tons of customers on to one server and hopes that not everyone will use what their package offers them.

I'll put this is really simple numbers. Say you're on a server with 99 other customers. Each customer is using 1% of the server's resources. A really popular site links to your 1KB homepage and suddenly, your traffic jumps from 1000 hits to 100K hits. Suddenly, your site is using 3% of the resources on the server. The server crashes. The host closes your account.

Hosting companies pay their bandwith providers somewhere between 10 and 25 cents per GB of bandwith (depending on quality of bandwith and volume purchased). How can they afford to give to 2100 GB for only $9.75 when it costs them at least $210 for that bandwith? And don't forget to factor in cost of hardware, rental fees, licenses, electricity, employees, etc.

There's a reason why a company like Phatservers only gives you 25 GB of bandwith on a shared account for $9.95/month.

If it sounds too good to be true, that's because it is.

Dude I don't really worry about it that much, i bought the hosting and im using it to host MPG's on, so far with about 10000 hits to my MPG's and 90gb later its still up and runnign, can't complain bout that for under 10 bucks

No, it doesn't depend on the company hosting it. It's overselling. The size of the company means sweet fuck all.

Let's take 1and1's business plan. You get 2000 GB of bandwidth for $10. Let's forget about all other costs except bandwith. Forget hardware, electricity, rent, employees, marketing, etc. For them to break even on just the bandwidth, they'd have to buy it for half a penny for gig. If you know of a bandwidth provider that sells bandwidth for that cheap, you could make a fortune by simply divulging that information to other hosting companies.

Why do you think Webair only gives you 250 GB of bandwidth on a $10 virtual account? Even they're overselling, except they're doing it much smarter.

I've heard bad things about servage as well - they have been around before the dawn of time, seriously I think they were one of the first hosting companies around and I think I even used them BEFORE I transferred to janey.net right when they were opening up ... Days of down time, etc ..

This was nearly a decade ago though ..

Dreamhost - as far as non adult, they get on your ass if you have heavy mysql use and actually made slight modifications to my program so it wouldn't have as heavy of a load on the server BUT they never threatened me with taking my account off line or forcing me to upgrade.

I am just now trying host gator, and I am NOT pleased with them as once you assign one of your seperate accoutns a domain and allow it say 2 GB .. even if you aren't using that web space they allot it for that site and you can't use it for any other sites. Sort of shitty ... Definitely geared more towards resellers, which I am not ...

Can offer 30 gigs of storage, 250 gigs bw, WHM , Cpanel, Fantastico & RvSkin.

Basically , server is shared by 3 similar accounts and a few " mom & pop " accounts ( doctors, castiong agencies, etc... )

I know that Asspimple is stoopid ... As he says, it is a FACT !

But I can't figure out how he can breathe or type , at the same time ....
