I won't say it's easy, but totally possible. I smoked for 7 years, been smoke free for 3.

The first YEAR is the hardest, especially if you like to drink and go out to bars. I quit before and relapsed a couple times within 5-6 months.

The only tip I can offer is tell him to start exercising. I don't believe in patches, nicotine gums, lasers, etc..Those might help with the physical part of the addiction, but as stated above, the hardest part is the actual habit itself.
