video to flv conversion follow up questions

ive asked some questions here but i need some more input on this...
im using these settings right now (audio settings as low as possible):

    520x390
    video bitspeed: 400000
    fps: 25

    1) when i convert an avi file it looks good, but a wmv with the same conversion settings is way more crappy. How come?

    2) a 30 seconds file with these settings is a little below 2mb. Is this acceptable for streaming on the web or is this too big for 30 secs?

If you use the correct FFMPEG or mencoder settings, your videos should look exactly, or very very near, to the original source quality, while the file size is comparable or below the source as well.

2MB for a 30 second video sounds fine to me.

Online or offline you can still use FFMPEG to do everything you need, and you'll be able to tightly control everything about the quality and size using it.

oh i thought it was someting for conversions on the server, not into this at all.
So i have to get conversion software using ffmpeg or at least using the same codecs or something? What do you use for this?

As far as I know, there's no GUI for ffmpeg and that's the way the programmers want it to stay.

There's a ton of ffmpeg tutorials out there. It's fairly basic once you find the settings you want to use ;)

i usually dl from members area, then cut the video to usally 1-3 mins, then encode with adobe media encoder, with default settings, usally comes out to 2-8 megs

thank you both for the info, ive been playing around with some settings and seems ive found a pretty good combo of quality vs size.
