I'm surprised no one has brought up bill 101 in here yet.
For those that don't know, the political party in QB actually passed a law making it illegal to advertise your products or services (among other things) unless it was in french. English is allowed, but in small percentages.
Now why would you ask would a government need to do such a thing? To protect it's language. French was dying out, the people were choosing english and if french died, how could the political parties use their language as justification for unique and preferential status in canada?Comment

Did you actually read that? Close to nazi comments? Do you actually KNOW that part of history? Saying what you did is a slap in the face of those that went through that period in history.
French people are self absorbed. I am Canadian. When I walk into a store in my Canadian, English speaking city I expect to be served and I expect to be treated politely. I also expect that if a French speaking person enters that same store they are to be treated exactly the same as the way I am treated.
The same goes for Quebec. It does not matter WHAT language a person speaks they should be treated properly. Just because many people do not agree with the attitude and apparent constant NEEDS of the French does NOT entitle them to treat the English speaking population with disrespect...not when OUR money gets filtered into your province and your economy.
Oh, and before you start spouting off at the mouth again....both my first and maiden name is VERY french, because my grandparents were french and barely spoke english...so it is not just the 100% English people that think you all need a spanking....those of french heritage think you need a rude awakening.
I do not have a problem with people in Quebec having French as their mother tongue, but if my kids are forced to learn French to accommodate your whiney asses, then I fully expect everyone Quebec to learn English.

The local french news radio (690) did a poll... did you find Mr Harper's idea "interesting" or something to that effect... result was 68% said yes.
Now 68% is reasonably high, but it is sampling only french speakers for the most part. Applied over the whole population (francophone, anglophone, and allophone) I would suspect the numbers would come up around 75%.
It would be so surprising to say that Steven Harper single handedly took the wind out of the seperatist sails. This could have a very large impact on the next provincial election if the Charest Liberals come out in support of this... it looks like a solution that appeals to the voters, and might leave the PQ high and dry once again.Comment

I am English and I've had many many run ins with very rude Frenh people...for example.....1) Trying to order food in English at a fast food restaurant and being told to speak French.....2) Trying to get into a NightClub at a skiing resort and the doorman letting all the frenh people who were behind us in first (and no there was no guest list)

As a guy born and raised in BC, I don't fully understand the Quebec separation sentiment. I've been sent to a few french only links in the past, which don't help me very much. Unfortunately, high school french allows me to read menu's and maybe order food in french and that's about it.
I'd really like to get an honest and full explanation for why so many people in Quebec want to separate... it just seems so extreme. Canada is a country full of people from different ethnic backgrounds and that is what makes us great.
My family has been in Canada for 14 generations. Our roots are predominantly Scottish and English. Try telling me that I am not a minority. Ask me how much it bothers me? Personally, I think it's great that we are assimilating so many peoples and cultures and traditions into our own and creating something entirely new and better then before.
As for the rude people comments... come on. I've experienced rude people in EVERY place I have visited and I have been to quite a few. I've had very rude service at a Japanese starbucks... I still think Japanese people are one of the most polite people on the planet. My visits to Hong Kong expose me to "mei yo" so often, but I don't think all Chinese people are rude...
In Montreal, tbh, I had some very excellent service from people who couldn't speak much english... and I can't speak much french at all.
I love Montreal. I loved the culture, the people, the food... I still don't understand the need to stop being Canadian because you speak french... It just doesn't make sense to me.Comment

And actually, although I do not live in Quebec, my family IS french, and no, I do not take offense to it. I find the French people who are so for seperating to be so narrow minded. I am for ALL of Canada...regardless of whether you are black, white or purple. I don't care if a person is Catholic, Buddist, or Jewish. I couldn't care less if they spoke Indian, Italian, French or English. Canada is a melting pot, that is a GOOD thing. Each race, each religion, each culture should celebrate what makes them special, but they should also celebrate being part of this great country called CANADA. Therein lies the problem. Many in quebec can't see past their nose..they can't see anything BUT Quebec....BUT the french....and that pisses the rest of us off. You are part of a whole, whether you like it or not...there is more to this country than Quebec....and you are NO MORE important than the Arabic people across the street and the Italian people that live next door to me.
Here in my city, we have what is called Carrousel of the Nations. It would you good to fly out and catch it here, it might be an eye opener for you. What is it? Well for a couple of weekends, tons of differnt cultures celebrate their heritage and have areas set up. For instance at the Greek one you will find Greek dancers, food, clothing and events. You find polish, caribbean, czech, italian etc. Streets are blocked off...and thousands spend a couple of weekends going from one culture to another. Soaking up their music, their food, their culture and having a BLAST. Yes, we even have a French one. It teaches you that we are more than individuals, we are part of something very special. I can go the the Italian area, dance in the streets, have Italians hugging and kissing me...eat their amazing food....they celebrate their uniqueness, but at the same time, they celebrate it with ME.
In Quebec, there are so many closed minded people, that think that it is only important for the French to perserve their culture...that if they cut themselves off that somehow they will preserve what they love. It is by opening yourselves up to others that are not french that you preserve it. It is by celebrating who you are with others, and with your family and community that keeps your culture strong...not by trying to wall yourselves up and hating everything that is not French.
You are special, but no more special than anyone else....and until Quebec gets that thru their heads there will continue to be problems.Comment
