in 2001 there were maybe 10,000 pro webmasters that knew what SEO meant. 2001 was pre-"googling". you didnt have to do much to get listed or get a lot of traffic. even thehun was still pretty new.
in 2009 there are millions of pro webmasters that all read the same SEO books and all use the same submit forms. there are millions of websites cutting each others throats for a piece of the surfer's dollar.
a friend of mine owns a used cell phone store next to a dirty bus station in thailand. i tell her she's lucky because her competition is limited to her neighboring stores.
online your competition is endless. no boundaries to competition.
SEO is useless. even if u are #1, numbers 2-9 will figure out a way to cut your feet out from under you.
moral of the story, you either have to cut down your competition or read "the long tail" and figure out how to get a piece of everything.
