In catholic school when we first got the C64s in "computer class" I think thats when my fascination started with computers and I couldnt stop playing that rat game where you made him move to get the cheese? Came home and told mom i was going to work with computers when I got old... ah the days of our youth, then by highschool they replaced all the "typewriters" in "keyboarding class" with macs and changed the name from keyboarding to COMPUTER LIT!
This is a Decwriter. It is a combination keyboard and printer, with a serial port which connected to a Modem, a 300 Baud modem, which then connected to an HP2000F Mainframe computer.
Programming was done in languages that included BASIC, COBOL and FORTAN (Basic was my favorite). The HP2000F was a "Time Sharing" computer that many people could use at once.
The best was placing multi-player Space War on it. It would PRINT "values" to describe a ship in space, such as SPEED COURSE BEARING RANGE. You could launch photon torpedoes or fire phasers etc. It was all played with numbers (Great for your imagination), and printed reports every 10 seconds or so to update the gameplay with the other players position in both 2D and 3D space. It was GREAT... I miss it!
first computer I had was a gateway that my parents bought back in 1992. pretty lame and had some baseball game that was horrible.
before that my dad had this crazy laptop with a black and orange screen. He would make me type my homework on it and I would have nightmares about the damn orange characters on the screen
those games are a damn joke compared 2 the shit 2 day
No way - you've got it wrong.
Think about it. These computers had 8 bit processors and maybe 16k of Ram (not even 1 Megabyte). The screen resolution was maybe 256 pixels wide by 128 pixels high.
Limited power? Maybe. Fun? Absolutely. My imagination during epic space battles outshined the crude graphics of course, but that was part of the fun.
And of course they don't compare to machines of today, but come on. Xbox 360's wouldn't exist without the Atari PONG.
And of course, ALL of these games owe themselves to the ORIGINAL video game: SPACE WAR. Writen in - holy fuck - 1962 - on a PDP-1. Now THIS was a Fucking Machine!!!!! Now THIS was fucking Programming!

I played on an apple in the late 80's. The first console I got was a super nintendo. After that nothing until last week when I got the xbox360. I'm always late with these things
Wasn't my first computer (that was a VIC-20 -- thanks Shatner!) and had a hand-me-down Atari 2600, but this was my first NEW console that I bought with my own moolah:
