    Are you thethering?

I'm tethering my desktop thru my iPhone right now and surfing GFY on 3G.

It not as fast as my network connect, but still surprisingly fast.

And its all AaronM's fault, he taught me how to do this.

I have an app on my WinMo phone that turns the phone into a Wifi hotspot using the data connection.

Do they have those for iPhone yet?

    Spend you some brain.

I dont know... sounds cool though. I'm just happy that now I can take my netbook anywhere and not pay an extra $60/month for its own 3g.

tethering requires a second mortgage in Canada... we're better off buying those little usb devices that do the same thing.

doesnt your phone already have 3g? Just use it like a modem.

It's cooked into a custom ROM I use for my HTC Diamond.

Here's an article about the app:

The phone company bills 'tethering' as a completely separate service, and tracks it somehow. So the moment I turn on the 'modem' functionality, I start paying a hefty price.

It works perfectly. We kept it running with a netbook connected to it while taking a road trip recently...streaming TV shows on Hulu.

A few years ago I was tethering my phone as a modem and the people at the at&t store said that if I was caught doing it I would be charged $50 per MB and the unlimited internet plan I had wouldn't cover it since I was using it on a laptop. That was in 06 or 07 though, surely the rules have changed now.
