Looks badass. It's on my list of places to go. I'll definately stay at that hotel though. Can I just check out a porsche/lambo/ferarri for a day from the hotel? Is it free?

I didn't ask that. You definitely could fit in 5 or 6 people easily. I don't know how cool they'd be with that. They have a facial recognition system so the second you walk into the hotel the entire staff knows you have arrived. We checked in went up to the gym and they knew our name pretty freaky but nice.

The cars are for rent at a similar price as they would be in the US. The only difference they look much less beat up than US exotic car rentals.

It looks likes you were also one of a very few people vacationing there... like having paradise all to yourself. Once the word gets out and more of the contruction is completed, I'm sure that place will be packed with people.

Much less glamorous, but worth mentioning, is that once the oil money began to flow freely in the early 1970's, the Maktoum family played a major role in getting some of that money down to the less affluent citizens of the region.

Maktoum bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai until his death earlier this year, was also vice-president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, a federation of 7 emirates. He and his younger brother were behind a healthcare program which, in the absence of good medical facilities locally back then, sent people, all expenses paid, for medical treatment abroad: primarily to London.

They set up an office in Harley Street to organize everything, fully staffed with interpreters who were collected and went with patients on their trips to hospitals and doctors. The patients themselves were put up in hotels and ferried to and from all their appointments by car. Everything was paid for so that even the poorest people could get treatment. And we are talking hundreds of patients being handled every day. It was an astonishing operation.

From those years I can attest to what Shap wrote about the friendliness and hospitality of the people, although it is an Arab thing not confined to the UAE. In particular they always wanted you to eat with them, and I have a vivid memory of one day when I had to sit down to my third lunch, wondering how I was going to get through it

You simply weren't allowed to refuse their generosity and we had drivers working on 24-hour call for some of the wealthier families who were given everything from suits through to cars, as well as huge tips.

None at all. We are Canadian but I'm sure they couldn't tell the difference. In fact I was blown away both times we went with how welcoming and open they were. We loved it so much we actually did some real estate shopping ;)
