                      If you know your history you know that the phrase "under God" was NOT in the pledge of allegiance until 1954 when a campaign by the Knights of Columbus added the words as a protest against prayer not being allowed in public schools, and got congress to add the words "Under God"

                                      I also thought it had to do with the communist scare. Communist didn't believe in any God. The USA felt it had to distinguish itself by inserting that the US is not a godless nation.
