Sales tax is a progressive tax. It might be better if the whole country moved to a federal sales tax. You would only be taxed once.
Here's a scenario. A family member dies. Leaves you a 500k house. under the current system you have to pay an inheritance tax of somewhere up to 50%. where would a young couple come up with that money? Well under the sales tax system you wouldn't have to come up with the money until you sell the property.
This system is also far more socially responsible than a income tax (even a graduated one) - but let's focus first with a flat tax - since it's more simplistic and shows the inherent falacies with the Current Tax Structure. The poverty line is 13.3k, in 1999 a minimum wage worker made nearly 11k a year. if they were expected to turn over 15% of their wage - they would have taken home $9,350. almost 4000 short of being able to pay for shelter, food and electricity.
The sales tax system would tax these people only if they made a choice to purchase cigarettes, alcohol, cars, houses, clothes or other things determined to NOT be necessary to sustain life.Comment

no thanks to the single moms. you know my mom had to raise me by herself. My father rarely paid his child support (even though he had the money).
It was a game with him - - trying to make my mom crack and take him back. Well she didn't. I always wondered if he thought about the effect that had on me - and my life growing up.
