coputer gurus - Windows XP help !!!!!!!

A frien of mine asked me to help him fix his PC - Windows XP wasn't booting up

I tried repairing it - noting worked, the only thing I could do was to install a new Windows Xp in a new folder

Now I have WNDOWS folder (his original operating system) and WINDOWS1 (the one I installed). I need to ipmort his settings form the old registry (the on that is stored in WINDOWS) to WINDOWS1

I can not import the registry using regedit because I need to export it forst from
WINDOWS (the old XP) but I can not log in there

Can I manually copy the files? Which are the files where the registry is stored? Sicne it is the same PC exactly the same hardware, none of the programs was deleted or moved that should work but which files do I manually copy from WINDOWS to WINDOWS1??

    thanks in advance

basically all he needs (and he doesn't know any usernames or passwords) is his ICQ username/pass, GoogleTalk username/pass, and his dial-up connection username/pass

If I can retrieve these three the rest can be reinstalled

you should stop what you are doing immediately, you really have no skills or XP knowledge to be futzing with his computer, on whta is most likely a very simple fix

Do you have a xp cd that is bootable? If you do, just boot it up and format his old shit! If the machine does not boot up with the cd, enter bios and change the bootup settings!

It boots up just fine right now, I simply installed second copy of XP on the same hard drive, it boots up and all the files on the C drive are still there but his programs setting are in the "old" registry files
