To be honest if you didn't even have very basic htaccess up you may as well post a message saying 'I love being hotlinked - come burn by bandwidth now'. Daft thing not to do and only yourself to blame.
Other thing I'm curious about is how much do you pay for BW???? $20 is a lot unless you're paying WELL over the odds.
Not saying the sites isn't full of thieving and freeloading scumbags but some of the blame really has gotta lie with you if you don't even have simple anti-hotlinking in place.
