I pay to get the NY Times delivered to my driveway every day. But the NY Times isn't like most daily papers, written on a fifth grade reading level with short little news blurbs. Mostly I enjoy reading something that isn't on the computer for a change and the longer magazine style articles on various topics from arts & entertainment to science, business and other things.

I don't see how this works. Copy&Paste is even easier than uploading to a tube site, so there's no controlling content. Free outlets will just plagiarize. And fewer and fewer people pay attention to the news when it's delivered free; most won't care enough to pay. It's actually incentivizing ignorance. Besides, there will always be those with an agenda willing to control information distribution and tell people what to think for free.

Either that or reduced server costs allows them to stay in business

There will always be people willing to pay, for some people the "time used searching" is simply too valuable if their favorite news paper start charging for access.

Based on what you are saying all paysites should become free

In the future news papers will become parasites that comes with your insurance, internet subscription, cable tv and similar things

or why not still have it free and add premium sections and "read more kind of stuff" for $2-3/month. One of the biggest newspaper have it and it seems to work for them

The downside of cheap free speech and internet freedom is the amount of bullshit. While all the nuts are doing "research" about 9/11 and fake moonlandings, bookmarking youtube channels and who-gives-a-shit blogs, the next Watergate will pass by - unnoticed.

i still get the sunday paper delivered because it contains coupons. i used to get it every day but for awhile i just did not have the need. our needs for it change often.
i do read news online. i also have a few paid subscriptions currently. now some of my subscriptions are just to magazines that also deliver me a hardcopy, though i visit their websites more than reading the magazine if that makes sense.

i could see myself paying for um wait perhaps i should not say that right now as i am damn sure it could be a fantastic business concept for the right people.
