Being an American I know both systems and was taught both systems in school. I have no problem converting the two and have no trouble when traveling abroad to convert between the systems.

So, why exactly does the rest of the world care what system we use? Perhaps we should also all be on: The same currency - it would make it easier, Speak the same language - Mandarin Chinese anyone? Same system of government...better yet, let's get a world government going.

Or perhaps you could find something better to do with your weekend...I know, it's a "Let's bash America" thread and it's really hard to resist, but seriously...this is almost as asinine a topic as when people were trying to shove soccer down our throats.

The obsession with minutia though is interesting.
    See Sig...oh wait.

As much US bashing in this thread, and it's citizens, makes me smile.

You hypocrites don't have a problem collecting the US Dollar.

Why is it "backwards"? because it's not what you use?

The fact is that neither is superior to the other. They are simply different. Why don't you speak Chinese? Based on your statement it must be important to know the number of people who who follow something, and there are more Chinese people than any other, so shouldn't you start speaking their language and stop your backward way of speech? Of course not.

Since 99.9% could not even point to Boratland on a map - why bother about units of measure? It's like speaking to a brick wall

perhaps that is how they measure in liters, but they don't measure cubic inches with liquids

Here you see, that English Imperial is not capable to measure fuel you bought and you have use metric methodology to easily measure hunderds of gallon.

Funny is, that by trying to defend English Imperial System, you just show, that it's outdated and metrics is much better...
What a minute, are you trying to say the Imperial system is incapable of dealing with anything but integers?

Decimals are base 10, that has NOTHING to do with "metric methodology" as you like to call it. It's been around long before metric was ever even thought of.

I'm starting to see why after 9 months you're still so confused.

How do they measure it? Honest question, I have no idea.
The best and most reliable (non-spaceage) method of measuring space is with a liquid as far as I know.

We use the same he's just confused. Difference being we measure engines displacement it in area(cubic inches) where as you use both area(cubic centimeters) and most commonly volume(liters)

Some amazing attitudes in this thread.

What's even more amazing is the fact that I've failed to see anyone [perhaps there were a few, I sped-read] actually defend the merits of the imperial system - but I've seen lots of people verhmently deny metric superiority, simply because they happened to be born in a certain country.

If you were born elsewhere, you'd probably be on the other side of the fence.

                                      Let's establish:
                                      Metric Advantages:
                                      - Has SI units. This is the major one.
                                      - Being based on base 10, [the 'natural base'] - flicking between units is fast and predicable. 1x1x1 cm of water is.. 1 cubic cm of water, which weighs.. one gram.
                                      - Base 10 removes the need for bizarre fractions,

                                      Imperial
                                      - Definitely the colloquial measuring system. People on both sides of the fence will always seem to talk about feet and inches. The units seem to be more appropriate for general discussions.
                                      - Firmly established - who woulda guessed - in the US.

Disadvantages of metric include the lack of colloquial reference - noone says ah that was about 25.4mm long, and the inclusion of 'fake' [non SI] units, such as centimeters etc.
Disadvantages of imperial is definitely the number of totally seperate, incompatible units - on a mathematical level, and its generally archaeich structure.

Personally, I prefer metric, because I hate fractions.
Hurrah for intelligent discussion - now I await to be told to STFU in some whore's one line response that has a 1:10 post length / sig size ratio.

With modern man now using the metric system there is sometimes a need to remember what the old units of measurement were, the common and not so common.
