Dog lovers......Bitter Lime?

Man my pit chews everything so I went and got this stuff called Bitter Lime. On the box "Stop your dog from biting and chewing wood or furniture" So I put it on the stairs and the porch and what does the dog do? Licks it right off. I thought this stuff would work but it doesn't. Have you had this prob and if so what did you use? This dog loves to chew wood.

yeah I've used the bitter apple stuff before and it worked, but my dogs are smaller breed than your little monster.

I believe they say spicy stuff will work too. Try habanero peppers?

They were sold out of the Bitter Apple and the lady said the Lime works just as well.

Does your dog have a shitload of toys and ropes he can chew on?if not go get a bunch and when you catch him chewing on something he shouldn't.tell him no and give him his thing he can chew on after a while it will click.don't yell or hit it won't fix it.

You need to exercise him more. Walk him with a backpack with weight in it for at least 40 minutes a day.. the more tired out they are the less likely to chew. And hot chili sauce works better. Also, keep a steady supply of things he can chew, when you catch him chewing on something bad, instead of giving him trouble, immediately turn his attention to something he can chew, and praise him when he gets it right. Persistance and patience will pay off.

They have all kinds of toys, they allso do this thing we call "Recycle" where they chew up the 12 pack boxes. The puppy hasn't chewed anything like shoes or anything. I have have to say she'll go into the laundry basket and put panties out. We walk for about 45 mins in the am and then again in the pm.

I have never hit or will hit either of my dogs.

What are you talking about the cops and a backpack? These are specially designed for dogs to wear, they're not hiking backpacks. Caesar Milan uses backpacks on pittbulls all the time and I can almost certainly guarantee he has a lot more experience with pittbulls than you do. I mean I guess when it comes to having a happy and balanced dog it's more important you don't feel funny walking a dog with a weighted backpack.

how old are they?

i feel your pain. my pit has been chewing everything she can get her jaws around when i am not in the house. she has even chewed holes through the walls. not at a corner, in a flat fucking wall.

i walk her everyday for at least an hour in the evening, and on the weekends we usually go play with some of my friends dogs, or go hiking in the woods, so she is plenty active. she also has more toys than i did when i was a child. i'm hoping she will grow out of it as she gets older (she is only about 7 - 8 months old right now), but i don't know.

as far as the bitter sprays i haven't tried them yet but everyone tells me bitter apple works great. i doubt it would deter her though. when she gets it in her mind that she wants to do something, short of hitting her with a large dose of ketamine there isn't much you can do to stop her. they are stubborn and willful dogs, but they're so loving i can't get too mad at her.

LadyMischief is 100 percent right. My vet said my German Shepherd digs when she gets bored. She said if you put a backpack on a dog they feel like they are doing a job and they love it. Unless your dog is a puppy, then he chews because he is bored. The bitter apple spray didn't work at all on my Black Lab.

That works for me. I got a Cane Corso who is 6 months weighing 80lbs on his way to 140lbs and he knows the difference between his toys and my 19 month old daughters toys. The trick with that was not buying the Cane Corso stuft animal toys.

When he was attempting to chew, i would crack him with a stack of junk mail and a firm "NO". Now the "NO" works without the letters.

I had the same problem with 2 pits. 45 mins walk 2x a day is not nearly enough. You need atleast an hour jog 2x a day till they are about 3-4 years old. Also, dont let them destroy anything. No beer boxes or recycling. You are telling them its ok to rip shit up. Also, I would not use the backpack idea as that will make a stronger dog that still needs to get rid of the energy. I have applied crushed chille peppers with a little water to stop dogs from chewing on things. Worked on all but a golden and a purebred wolf. However, it will stain some stuff. Mostly, dogs need to run, not just walk. Step up the pace and distance and you will see improvements.

There are a few people here in NC that do dog fights, is sad but it's a fact. I would not walk my dog with weights in a backpack. Yes I'm 100% sure Caesar does have more experience with pitts. I will be getting a treadmill as I stated in my other post. She's 4 months old so some of it has got to be due to her teeth.

I wasnt clear. its not having toys its when you see the dog chewing something you say no immediately replace with a rope ,a raw hide etc. you may have to do it 20 times a day but then it will click with the dog.

Our spaniel was a crazy chewer for the first two years. We tried a ton of things but I think in the end the only thing that actually worked was her growing out of it.

Ya a treadmill will work but why no backpacks? You have to do twice the walking to equal the workout a dog gets with some weight on their backs. I fill my dog's packs with water bottles. If the cops want to stop you let them and let them see the water bottles. ;) It would shock you the difference it makes in draining the dog's energy. A treadmill is good, but it also does not replace the stability and "pack activity" of walking. The walk is a very important part of dog leadership, dog packs travel together and therein lies much of their bonding. Having a trainer is awesome, but there's still no replacement for just taking him out and draining that energy down to nothing ;)

Tire her out, and make sure that her skin is not dry or something. Maybe try a second opinion from another vet, sounds like a possible skin allergy. Something that might help though, put a raw egg in her food once or twice a week. It helps to condition their skin and fur and keeps pet dander way down.

When you release the dog's energy in this case is key. If your dog is cooped up all day alone, with all that energy, then of course they are going to get into things Whether it's seperation anxiety or just sheer boredom, leaving a dog full of energy in a house cooped up is a recipe for destruction. Try tiring your dog out thoroughly BEFORE you leave the house, that way they are tired and lazy for the day.

I've never seen or heard of people who use their dogs in dogfights putting backpacks on their dogs to drain energy If you see people with them on their dogs, more likely they are hiking and wearing their dog out than anything. 4 Months old yes she's teething, but now is when you sent the trend for the rest of her life, so the sooner she learns to keep to her own things the better. I had two puppies at once I was training and my house took a beating until they learned, but man was I glad when they did. :P

to calico jack whose dog is chewing the hair off her rear legs....this can be either an obsessive behaviour, which is taken care of by draining energy....i.e., more exercise or it could be a food allergy, in which case, if you can't afford the allergy testing, try switching to a food that does not contain corn or wheat.....one of my shih tzus used to do that...chewed until he bled and we changed to natural choice lamb and rice and he stopped.

nothing stopped the chewing of wood with our shih tzus and we used to use a mixture of every hot sauce you can imagine.....they liked the taste. our kitchen table looked like rats had gotten to it.

we don't give them stuffed animals, because the squeaker allegedly is mimicking the sound of a wounded animal....i can't remember where i read that, might be on one of caesar's shows.....but it makes sense that that is what keeps them coming back for more.

for those who don't have the time to drain energy...after all, caesar, i believe, exercises his dogs for four hours a day, hiking and swimming and all the stuff he does, starting at 6 a.m.....while impressive, i doubt if any of us have that kind of time.

my dogs are on the treadmill an hour per day and one is a 13 year old shih tzu, who no longer engages in mindless digging and chewing....and the other one , which is a corgi/red heeler mix plus whatever.... is nice and tired with three walks a day along with the treadmill.

it's worked wonders.
