I think your point about human genetics might have something, I was at a buffet type lunch today and looking at people around me and it seems like there is a large percentage of mutants in the world nowadays, not the people we see on tv on soap operas or reality shows, just strange looking people that are out and about in the real world.... it is bizzarro
