Unfortunately even if it's legal in New Jersey, or Massachusetts, the marriages aren't recognized on the federal level, and become null and void if you move to a different state.
Which means none of the over 1,500 protections that marriage provides a couple on the federal level, apply to married gay couples.
Again, an equal protections issue.

first let me say that i am all for people who want to get married whether it be same sex or opposite sex. if you feel you can put up with someone the rest of your life, go for it.
with that being said, i would think that if more people moved to states that recognized same sex marriages (yes i know that can be a bit difficult on a small scale to up root your life but look at the bigger picture) this would eventually be pushed on a federal level (i dare say that even states who refuse to recognize same sex marriages would eventually have to change their views). i mean in the scope of things, something as grand as this should be pushed on a state level first imo.
maybe my way of thinking is too idealistic.ICQ: 309756847

So, how about explaining your stance on domestic partnership laws that give same sex partnerships the same basic benefits enjoyed(?) by married couples?Unfortunately even if it's legal in New Jersey, or Massachusetts, the marriages aren't recognized on the federal level, and become null and void if you move to a different state.

Why is it that gays can enjoy these benefits, but bvecause I am a "breeder" I have to actually marry the chick to reap the benefits?
What is equal about that?Comment

States that have domestic partnership laws that do provide protections at the state level, also enforce legal obligations on the couple similar to those of marriage at the state level. Dissolving a registered domestic partnership is a process very similar to "divorce" on the state level.
That being said, I'm certainly not going to try and defend domestic partnership laws, nor would the vast majority of gays. We're not the ones pushing for them, and we're not the ones coming up with them.
They're a product of legislators trying to create a "separate but equal" system of law not seen in this country since the times of segregation.Comment

I guess you are going to have to come to terms with the fact that on the federal level the people of the US are not interested in same sex marriages.Domestic Partnership laws provide NO protections on the federal level.

Why do you keep trying to get me to move to Canada? The "if you don't like it leave" attitude is a pretty damn shitty one.
I'm a citizen of the United States, and I love this country. When I see something that's NOT RIGHT, be it bans on gay marriage, federal money being banned from stem cell research, the death of habeas corpus, torture, the war in Iraq, or any of the other fucked up things going on now, I don't "cut and run" to steal a line from the Supreme Czar Bush, I work to CHANGE THINGS.
I'm glad more people don't think like you. If everyone in this country just up and fled when they saw something they didn't feel was right, we as a nation probably wouldn't even exist anymore.

when you start hating, you lose your audience. blacks didn't create change by hating. you can't hate others for their supposed hate and expect anyone to listen to you. thats makes as much sense as being in an insane asylum and tryng to eat the most paint chips to call attention to the fact that your not crazy... meanwhile the others are just upping your meds to protect you from yourself.Comment

I am pretty sure I have already tried suggesting the "if you don't like the laws, work on getting them changed" approach, but you didn't seem too receptive to that either. Why do you keep trying to get me to move to Canada? The "if you don't like it leave" attitude is a pretty damn shitty one.
