The old man gives us a lot to think about. One sees the old man and wonders...
Where is he going?
He is fairly well-dressed... was he successful in life?
What is the mysterious paper he's holding?
His gaze leads me to believe that his holding onto the rail is a metaphor for a man at the end of his life, trying desperately to hold on to the few days he has remaining.
