hosting questions for a newb, bandwith/billing options

Hey guys, any help would be very apreciated! I am setting up a pay site, actually a collection of 3-4 sites, and am having a real time of it trying to figure out a hosting plan. The biggest issue is of course bandwith, I really am shooting in the dark as I have no real idea what to expect, at least for the first few months. I was looking at cavecreek and isprime and am pretty sure I will end up going with one of them. Isprime is offering a special deal of a dedicated managed server with 30 Mbps for 899.00. CaveCreek is far more expensive, but they have a good facility and reputation from what I have heard. Anyone have any thoughts on either of those two hosts?

Also, what would be the best way to go about billing, 95th percentile, per gig, or non burstable?

The sites will offer some pretty large clip sizes, up to 200-300 megs per clip.

Also, I was budgeting 500-1000 per month for hosting, at least initially for the first few months the sites are up.

Thanks for taking the time to read, and any thoughts are appreciated

I'd say renting a dedicated server for that much a month is well, frankly pretty dumb.

Go buy yourself a server for 3,000 bucks. Co-locate it in a datacenter for around 200 bucks a month - have access to it whenever you need to.

And if you co-locate it in the bandwidth hotel in St. Louis or at a data center in Dallas, we can talk about my company maintaining it for you.

Ok, so for 200.00 a month, what kind of bandwith do you get? There really isn't any costs involved in those numbers with renting the server, it is mostly paying for bandwith.

Both CaveCreek and ISPrime are great hosts - I would suggest taking a look at our offering with www.RealityCheckNetwork.com

            DELL PowerEdge Server
            3Ghz Xeon
            1GB RAM
            2x73GB RAID1 protected storage
            + 1000GB Data Transfer = $350/mo.

As far as billing I would say per GB is typically best for a pay-site as traffic is very sporadic and bursty.

Additionally we provide the following features standard with all of our plans:
            24x7 Tech Support
Server Monitoring - if a service like Apache/DNS/FTP breaks our techs are alerted and begin fixing the problem immediately - this means you get to sleep easy at night
Security Hardening - all of our machines are secured as part of our customer install to ensure hackers do not gain access
Performance Optimization - after years of handling high traffic websites we now bring the same tweaks that sites which receive 1,000,000+ uniques/day to your server - this means the fastest loading pages around
Highly peered network - means no downtime as well as fast connections to broadband surfers, the ones most likely to buy a subscription

Please contact me on ICQ: 4930562 so I can address any special needs that you may have.

Thanks for your time and hopefully you'll put us on your shortlist.

At the bandwidth hotel, 200 a month would be 200GB of bandwidth from 8 carriers. You'd also be paying for zero downtime. They have redundant everything - that's where our server is located(I work at a mainstream web dev/hosting/marketing firm) and we have zero problems.

The bandwidth hotel is probably the most expensive data center as it's the best, but.. the one in Dallas is exceptionally good as well.

You mentioned some great hosts, others have posted here, and I'd like to add one more for you to look at ;)

I will try to answer your billing method questions as simply as possible:

Per Gig - Best for smaller amounts of transfer.
95th Percentile - Can be best for larger amounts of transfer, but you can get nailed with overages.
Unmetered - Gives you a fixed cost which makes budgeting easier, and is typically less expensive, volume wise, than the other methods.

Please contact me with any questions.

                        Good luck
