It would be like if there were elections for seats in parliament but th PM wasn't also running. It isn't a presidential election..mid his term...but is an election for members of congress.

Essentially the reason it is a big deal is because whichever party has the most seats in congress controls it and pretty much determines what gets passed, etc. So, if there is a republican president and a republican congress than it is going to be much easier for the republican agenda through. Same deal if it is a democrat congress and president. However, if it is, for example, a republican president and a democratic controlled congress than things get more complicated/interesting for both sides..ie checks and balances.

My ballot was sent in last week

        Simpler explanation:

Terms for President are 4 years, terms for congress/senate members are 2 years.

So every other congress/senate election, is considered a "midterm" election. Since it occurs in the middle of the president's term.

Members to the House of Representatives are only elected to 2 Year terms, so there are elections for Congress every 2 years, instead of every 4 years for the President.

Members of the Senate are elected to 6 year terms, with 1/3 being up for re-election every 2 years.

Actually, it's a form of checks and balances. It was designed to keep politicans from getting too comfortable and to allow a recall of anyone who was not serving the public's best interest.

Although, that was the idea. We know it really means a balance of power for those not serving their "special interests" well enough. The public doesn't know or care what happends.
