You need to be prepared to work hard. I started by building a site, then I tested it with Google. If it converted really well, then I went on to build traffic to it.
Building quality traffic to you site is a key success factor. Once you learn how to do that, you will be that much better in this business.

I'm saying the same thing as some guys before me, gallery submission and blogs.
Read a few tutorials and 101's and you'll get started in no time.
After submitting 1 gallery every day for a month and comparing your own work with others and improving you should start to see some nice money coming in. If not, keep at it for another month or two, keep improving and ask people for advice!
As for blogs it can take a bit longer to see any results but don't despair, once you get your traffic and signups going a blog is very well worth your while with a steady flow of traffic and signups!

It takes time, but your $1000 is not out of reach. There is a lot of things that you can do, it has already been mentionned in the previous posts, but make sure you do something for your site EVERYDAY, whether it will be a blog, a post, advertising etc. The more you get your site out there, the better. If you work on a regular basis you will reach the top. (And probably a whole lot more than $1000. ) I wish you the best of luck !
