I just ran spybot for the first time in months and it didn't delete one affilate program cookie.

Exactly it nukes tracking cookies from ad networks and counters. NOT from affiliates.

Seems like a much easier solution IMHO... sufers arent the most tech savy bunch.

It's funny how everybody insist to do this the hard way.

I've been telling surfers about spyware/adware and pointing them to spybot for years now.

I have never done all that redirection stuff but I have made a effort to inform surfers.

No way in the world is a surfer going to edit his/her registry for this. That is seriously scary shit (i.e. editing the registry) to most average surfers.

I would never suggest to a surfer "go edit your registry". Many of the people surfing our sites get stuck when their mouse gets to the end of the mousepad, let alone actually doing anything technical.

Keeping a page like that up to date is pretty much impossible, and it doesn't address the "hidden versions" of spyware that lurks.

Further, it doesn't address the hundreds of other spyware programs that are out there. If a surfer has zango, you can be he has (our will have) another toolbar / helper / scumware / smilie package installed within seconds of leaving your site.

Sending them to download a proper spyware removal tool made by people who do that for a living is a million times better than suggesting to a surfer to edit anything in their machine. One false move in the registry, and their machine is dead as a doornail and their lawyer is looking for your name. Liability here is huge.

adaware, spybot, and couple of others do good jobs, and installed on a user's system, will encourage them to do it now and again.

for this to be effective, I think somebody needs to make either a .reg and/or .bat file that will automatically do step #2 for the user ... as I'll be willing to guestimate at least 50% of PC users are not comfortable editing their registry manually.

this is it stands is a bandaid solution for technically savvy webmasters only (of which I am one .... but 5 out of 8 people I asked said they would not attempt it)

A lot of scumware gets installed by *scaring* the surfer into installing something to "fix" their problems. So, it might not be the best idea to redirect people to a scare page that are looking for porn - they can't tell the good guys from the bad guys.

I'm inclined to agree with Jim on this though... you are only redirecting those surfers who have zango installed, and they absolutely NEED a wakeup call.
