Michael Jackson: Persepective of an eight year old

Yesterday I had the news one and everything was about Michael Jackson. My eight year old daughter walks in and says "Daddy, what's all of the fuss about with this weirdo? The oxi clean guy died and no one is talking about that and he way more popular".

    Go figure.

the concept of people being born in the year 2000+ and soon to be adults is a disturbing one, culture and the whole world has changed so much in the last few decades

I still can't get over the fact that someone born in 1991 is a legal adult already

I decided long ago that when I have kids I am going to be one of those weirdos that doesn't have cable tv in the house.

Most of the girls I hang out with in the 21-26 year old range are fucking stupid. All of the knowledge they have comes from E! and People Magazine.

Kids inherently cut through the BS and see things more clearly.

Sounds as though your daughter is well-adjusted.

When I was a child I thought local kid-show host Skipper Frank was bigger than Bob Hope because Skipper Frank was on TV every day.

I got over that later. Although I flipped when I met Mark Wilson a couple of years ago.

I believe this decade and the 90's were really awful when it comes to music, I feel that teenagers and people in their 20's have no music idol today, no model to follow. I remember back in 1991 that Guns N' Roses was the thing, MJ was doing black or white, Madonna was there too and also Nirvana and all the Seattle movement.

It's no surprise to me these generations are kinda lost. They don't even know how to write well due to SMS.

                  Exactly correct!

Just as the majority of parents in the Western world!...

                  OMG

You actually belive kids, understand details of their own??

That's a lazy parents armchair lie

I decided long ago that when I have kids I am going to be one of those weirdos that doesn't have cable tv in the house.
I feel the same way, also that technology and gossip news we care for(we feel we "must care") in todays is mentally disturbing.

For example I walked in to a second hand boutique and bought myself a telephone from old times, that's probably 40 years old. And it's 100 times more human than my 21-century telephone ever had been.

You see, now I feel a one on one conversation is more rewarding than talking in a stupid telephone.

                  WhY?
Because the quality is poor, it' feels like going back through time, and trying to dial a number actually take me some finger strength and THINKING to get the numbers right.

I think we are numb because we have been exploited to things that never had the intentions to fit our structure as human beings. Just to sell us on fairy tales.

I will probably do the same thing too. I want self aware and intelligent kids, why settle for less anyhow?. Why let them watch reality soap operas and get as dumb as me, and others that was grown up with them. Most important I am not gonna let them sit for hours watching cartoons television. I was raised on Cartoons!!

Shouldn't you be thinking about spending more time with your 8 year old if she knows who the oxi clean guy is? It kind of indicates that she is watching just a little too much TV.

LOL. The funny thing is she doesn't watch much TV. She's more of a laptop type of kid.

Yeah, my daughter is the same and she's 10. She knows the wazzup budweiser commercials and they're as old as she is.

You're right. I remember my parents telling me they knew what I was up to because they were young at one time. But they didn't have a clue what I was doing. I don't even pretend to know what kids who grew up 2000+ are up to these days or how they think. The world they're living in is very different from the one I grew up in.

Of course they have idols to model their lives over... they are just shallow and "ME" driven. They have Paris Hilton, the kids from Laguana Beach or Gossip Girl or whatever twisted teen trash is airing these days, or the next pointless reality tv show or reality tv wanna be celebrity, and the list goes on.

I talked to a girl once where her only goal in life was to become a reality tv star. Sad... very sad.

As compared to what? The 1980s? Don't get me wrong, I love my 80s music, but keep in mind we listed to Culture Club, Tiffany, and "I wear my sunglasses at night". Deep stuff.

We live in a world dominated by celebrities who have done nothing but be celebrities, edia that feeds us n ones as if they are icons. So when someone who has achieved something dies in unusual circumstances you can bet the media will milk it for all it's worth.

I remember back in 1991 that Guns N' Roses was the thing, MJ was doing black or white, Madonna was there too and also Nirvana and all the Seattle movement.

It's no surprise to me these generations are kinda lost. They don't even know how to write well due to SMS.
I was a teenager during the 60s and experienced some of the best music of the 20th Century in the late 50s through to the 70s. Why was music so good in those days?

Here's a theory. When you can only afford one album a month we made sure it was good and can be listened to time and time again. Today anyone can download a new album for free every day. The demand for new is insatiable, the return on investment means very few bands like Pink Floyd, The Who, Beatles, Yes (and more) can spend a year in the studio to create anything worthwhile.
