    Piracy and porn

This is for a friend of mine who is a writer, you can either reply here or email him directly at- fayneralmighty at gmail.com If you do email him directly he would quote you in the article. For those who don't know, he runs the blog www.scottfayner.com and has been a Hustler writer for years.

    From Scott-
I'm working on an article for the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of
Technology) magazine Technology Report about porn and technology, and am
focusing on the piracy issue and what the industry (owners, directors, web
guys) are doing tech-wise to fight it. Anyone who has any info that could
help would be greatly appreciated, like what specific programs are being
utilized to stop product from being stolen.

just tell him this: porn webmasters HATE piracy, they even think about ways to stop it while they are ripping their netflix dvds, downloading the latest metallica album, free fonts ripped from purchased discs, etc...

If the brainy folks at MIT were really interested and concerned about porn, copyrights and piracy - wouldn't they have come up with something by now that would help put an end to it?

      Just a thought...

Let him know, that contrary to popular belief, the porn industry is not run by the mob, but is instead filled with spineless self-destructive wimps, who never put a hit on the people who started the first tube sites, so now our product has been devalued to virtually nothing.

He can write about how one of the only recession-proof industries decided to shit the bed, and screw itself over, under the misconception that massive CRAP traffic, filled with millions of FREELOADERS, was just so fucking attractive, that everyone in the biz decided to shoot themselves in the foot, falling all over themselves competing to give more and more expensive content away for FUCKING FREE!!!

DRM doesn't do anything but piss off legit customers. I'd be surprised if anyone successful was still using any.

Tell him there is a new virus thats able to be placed into stolen videos that are not paid for. They then send the computers details to the FBi and say this was downloaded illegal, her is my IP, address etc. Might scare the weak minded.

Here let me be the one to actually answer the question...since I'm one of the only ones who actually did anything about protecting my stuff:

I found all of Claudia-Marie.Com members area ripped on torrent sites for free. This was about a year ago.

I started noticing that instead of 40 to 50 full sales (we don't do trials) a day, I was suddenly down to 5 or 6 a day! That's when I started investigating things and from reading here on GFY discovered what a torrent site was.

At first I railed and screamed and whined and cried here on GFY and made plans to join coalitions of webmasters to bring legal actions etc. It quickly became apparent that wasn't gonna work.

So then about 6 months ago we worked and tested and finally were able to do some scripting that in conjunction with an encrypted streaming server in multi-layers of security that stops people from being able to steal our vids.

So at that point I had a streaming only solution.

BUT, I still wanted to give my members a downloadable version as well.

So, my "one-two punch" is that I offer them a low quality smaller resolution and heavily watermarked .wmv downloadable version as well. So they can watch the vids in high quality via streaming...which gives them the ability to instantly move anywhere in the scene (VERY COOL) AND they can have a small downloadable version as well.

And the downloadable version is actually perfect for "marketing" on torrents and tubes. It's just good enough to show what we have, but not good enough to completely satisfy a person's desire for a quality video.

Our sales and rebills for Claudia-Marie.Com are now as strong as they have ever been. And that is the honest truth. Not the bullshit that I read posted here that is made up here by programs trying to cover their ass. We don't do trials. Just full memberships.

I only wish that the hundreds of programs that I am an affiliate of and USED to make good money with would do what I did so people would actually buy memberships to their sites again and I could raise up my affiliate money. Right now if it weren't for dating and cams...the money I make as an affiliate would be shit. It's a hard sell to get someone to buy a membership to all these sites that are being given away for free.

first off.. im not going to tell him shit, he has a link to this thread, so he can check out things himself.

this is a serious topic for a serious journal. i would think some attention whores out there would actually get a kick out of seeing their names listed in it. but hey, if you just wanna prove to this board once again that most porn producers are nothing more than juvenile jerk offs, be my guest.

who knows, maybe some brainiac at MIT will take a minute after reading the article and decide to help... ya never know, nerds like to jerk off too since their isn't that much pussy to go around.

thanks robbie for an actual serious post.

We've gone after two individuals in the past who we learned were using our copyrighted content on their paysites (one of which had it plastered on the mainpage and tour).

In both cases we contacted the site owners with emails that threatened legal action if we weren't monetarily compensated for our 'potential loss of livelihood due to the copyright infringement'. The emails were composed with some help from our company attorney - and they were rather intimidatingly worded.

Both webmasters contacted us shortly after receiving the emails (one even called us in a panic by phone from Britain around 3am, lol - forgetting the time difference). And in both cases we reached a satisfactory settlement with each individual.

But that was a few years back - we haven't been too active lately in chasing infringement situations. We're aware the infringement is still happening, but its time-consuming to chase them down. Not to mention that it can be like trying to get the proverbial blood from a stone (read: kids livin' in mommy's basement).

Basically, we wanted to set a precedent for ourselves to refer back to in the event that we came across a really blatant and damaging infringement situation.

You might want to have your MIT pal check out the (somewhat old) Suze Randall vs. Max Sheridan infringement settlement details - http://www.a-w.org/news/051600.htm - $338k were awarded during the case and it was considered somewhat of a landmark case back in the day.

DRM is seamless now... Members don't notice it, legit customers don't get pissed. Every Adult VOD Site uses it along with many other Paysites.

                                        Excellent post Robbie.
