What Type of Job, Career, or Profession...

    ...could you not do?

I had an interesting discussion with a friend of mine this evening on some careers, or job types and why you could not do them, nor would want to do them, or would be too difficult for you.

For me, it would be any of the following...

    1. Firefighter/Counselor/Doctor/Medical.
    2. Manual Labor. Regardless of the job.

What would be yours, and why?

We all gotta do manual labor at some point... just not as a carreer...

I would hate to work on an oil field or refinery, which I've done, because it seems the higher up you get the more stressed you are. The more they know about the fragility of the system, the more stress they live... like PTSD but before the explosions.

No matter when you went to the can there, there was always some guy taking explosive, evacuation shits in the stalls, unable to digest properly from the anxiety...

      True dat.

My sister works in a factory. She is a loader, or does something with paper machines, and loading up pallets, as well as fork lift driver. She does some back breaking, repetitive, work in 100 degree heat (sometimes in summer).

No fucking way I could do that shit.

Although I have heard stories of people who work for Pfizer around the corner from my house. They have some better working conditions. But the same repetitive bullshit all day for $10-12 an hour. No thanks.

No one cared about you the first time you said it. Or the next dozen times you repeated it. No one fucking cares now.

              Take a hint. Piss off.

                That was my feelings exactly.

Anything like that, either medical or firefighter, type of jobs where you would have to some how deal with that overflow of emotion would be beyond me.

I simply could not deal with it on a daily basis.

Any job that involves extreme heights.

Oddly, heights never bothered me growing up...just the last 10-15 years.

                    That's interesting.

So as you have gotten older, you became afraid of heights?

                        None taken.

I have heard that a lot over the years. Especially when people find out what I do. They simply do not understand why anyone would pay for it, or how I make a good living on it.... feet and tickling.

any job where I have someone telling me what to do who's skill level is below mine; i.e. over paid under knowledged white color corporate management.

I had two jobs like this, both of my superiors/boss's were morons and it was like taking orders from a chimp. I had to train the one on how to use Excel, which was a big part of this job!!

basically any job that I would not have complete control over what im doing, ill pass

no feet or heights. When I lived in NYC I had the opportunity to possibly get into the iron workers union. It paid like $1500 a week and this was the late 80's. But the thought of walking around on those skyscrapers 30 to 60 stories up. Nope not in this lifetime.
Ive done office work and manual labor. The nice thing about manual labor when the day was over it was over. There was no over flow to the next day.

                                          Yeah. Um. Sorry.

I do not think I would get used to wearing a diaper, or shitting in my pants every time I looked down or there was a stiff wind blowing and I was up there.

Hmm.. I *could* do pretty much anything, but I'd rather not work in a retirement home or 'the last place where people go before they die'. Not really interested in changing grannies diapers and washing them etc. I do give all the respect possible to the people who do, but I'd rather not.
                                                  ..and I'm off.

I used to think the same thing, until I actually got into a situation where a guy was bleeding from his head and I had to help him since nobody else was doing anything. I realized only then how good it feels to make a difference.

That's what made me decide on med school

As for things I couldn't do: sales, and especially cold calling. Bothering people with useless shit would make me feel like a complete douche.

Yeah. That is why I had to expand to just 'medical' in my O.P..

It covers so much. From the horror of seeing mangled bodies. To changing shitty diapers. Blood and guts. The emotion of family members bawling over the journey of life. Simply way too much for me on so many different levels.

I sorta agree. I was always sick when I saw blood and all. But then this accident happened right before our eyes - we stopped to help. It was like fucking insane, two guys bleeding like hell. Thinking back, I would say I'd faint from all that. But something kicks in in a situation like this, and you start thinking different. Suddenly it wasn't a problem for me to help, call emergency, get the guys out, etc. The human brain is a wonderful thing.
