Question to the talented web designers here

I'm always amazed looking at some of the work the various designers here on GFY do. I was wondering if your self taught or if you took classes? do you have a degree for webdesign?

For the most part, I guess I taught myself. I do have a degree (MBA) but it has nothing to do with web design. I guess it all depends on the person, but in my experience the best designers possess that extra something that can't be taught; you just have to come by it naturally.

No degree here. Taught myself HTML in 4th grade and picked up Photoshop back when the newest version was 4. Head up to Barnes & Noble with a cup of coffee and browse through the books there - it's the only education you'll need. I took a few graphic design courses in college and found myself showing the teacher how to do things.. a college degree in graphic design is hardly worth the price.

in-born talents take over. we only took degree programs to sharpen our skills. it is like a pencil that needs a sharpener and/or a scissors that needs a grindstone. though sometimes we lack in proper explanation to answer a question.

Well, as what I noticed from friends, they learned first at school then with another person who's better than them.

Its all about learning the basics and expanding from there. Photoshop and flash are just tools and aren't as rigid as code so you can do things 20 different ways to get the same result. Though I can say this with design some people get it naturally, others learn and apply the principles, and the rest monkey around create crimes against nature.

Have you used Flash recently? You'll notice that in the past few years they've added ActionScript, a coding language.. good Flash animations are built using it, and as such require both creativity and programming skils.

self taught here, personally I've never hired anybody to do anything computer related for me who wasn't self-taught. If you have to take classes then you are not motivated enough. Just use tutorials, and while your first sites look like shit once you get an eye for design its easy as fuck...

yes I'm quite aware of actionscript and I also know it enough to know that unlike programming in certain languages you can go about multiple ways to get a desired result. I see it less of a set language and more like a set syntax or semi-structure thats open to multiple perspectives and phrasings. The more you know about action script the more elastic it becomes. Yes it requires some programming know how but even the best flash gurus learn to do new things with it every year.

It absolutely is more of a coding structure than it is a language, my point was not that it's similar to PHP or C but that a strictly artist type designer may encounter problems trying to use Flash to its fullest advantage. Tasks that would take drawing dozens of single frames to complete can be done using ActionScript with several objects and in just a few lines of code.

Well, speaking about our studio I can tell, that all our designers learned themselves. Many of them switched from mainstream to adult. Having experience in mainstream it was not hard to start working in adult biz.

Though we had to learn how the industry works in order to make targeted designs for sites to convert well.

Besides, working with adult content is more interesting, than working in mainstream.

And as for designers' skills - practice makes perfect. If you don't want to learn things - no one will make you do this. You should make your way yourself.

So experience, experience, experience + creativity (this is really important). A person can be a photoshop guru, but without experience in the industry he'll create messy designs... And without creativity everything he creates will look quite the same...

the best possible way is seeing someone doing an actual design... i acquired mine when i was working in an outsourcing company. looking at co-workers work gain a lot of new experiences. self-taught is also other way but you have to be resourceful.. reading tutorials on the net of course... surfing sites like templatemonster is goodway to get an idea to produce good designs..
