I agree - most people don't usually leave a percentage like you would in a restaurant, but the $5-$10/day rule is a good one for a nice hotel. For a regular chain hotel, leaving $10 for a few days' stay is probably fine.
You could probably read up on the tipping rules for whatever country you're traveling to, as well. When I lived in England, people often tipped only 10% at restaurants (or less) and the Japanese often don't tip at all unless they are in America and made aware of the fact that tips are NOT included...my extended family had to be made aware of this when they were visiting.
Anyway, tip based on the service you're getting! It's not exactly required but it shows appreciation and a certain level of class on your part.
