To Crop Or Not To Crop?

i'm debating with myself - i know guys who run TGP sites crop their thumbs - but what about members area galleries - anybody here hand crop those? I was talking to a webmaster who runs solo girl sites and he said 'why are you doing that? i hate cropped thumbs' - i prefer them, they look better but maybe i'm wrong - maybe members would prefer to see the whole photo thumbnailed instead of cropped thumbs?
I moved my sites to Vacares Hosting. I've saved money, my hair is thicker, lost some weight too! Thanks Sly!

I don't think it really matters as long as they are nice and bright.....

i dont think its that big of a deal for members area. most people just use the little gallery viewer and click through the entire set.

i know it's a small thing but just wanted to see what people prefer

here's a sample - top row uncropped, bottom cropped.

If I were going for the cropped look, I'd be cropping in a lot tighter then you are in your samples. A cropped thumb (generally) has a main focal point, instead of just edges cut off. What you're doing there does look cleaner then uncut.

i did do them that way for a members area but when I looked at the thumb index pages i felt that the whole thing became too much of a mystery for the member - on a TGP you want to draw the viewer in and get him to click so a nice tight crop on the face or a great body part works but on a thumb index for a members gallery i think the viewer wants more of an overview of the set - so i cropped these just to get a bit tighter in on the subject of the photo so u avoid thumbs ,ike the far right one where the model looks small.

seems like a waste of time, to some it may look slightly better, but I don't think it will effect retention much at all... you are better of spending that time doing something more productive I would think...

To me cropping is used when you desire one to click. If you crop a picture just right, action off scene, odd facial expression, whatnot. People will click to see whats going on.
If you want people to scan them all quickly and load the ones that interest them you do not crop. Saves on bandwidth.

If thats all you're cropping then it would be a waste of time. Probably wouldn't matter for a members area anyways.
