Living here in the Midwest I never thought I would see so many businesses with Spanish names. We have gas stations and used car lots with Spanish names. And damn, one out of ever three restaurants is Mexican. I like tacos just as much as the next guy but how about some variety.
Sometimes I Think Us Americans Should All Just Start Learning Spanish

Sesame Street has been teaching Spanish since at least the early 80's. It was how I could tell I was watching the US version, because the Canadian version taught French.

It was sad, one day I was at the store, and a guy comes up to me with a box of something or other and in Spanish asks me if I can read it to him. I only speak a little Spanish, so I point out the part of the box that is in Spanish, he he told me he couldn't read.

And members of La Raza are up for bids on the SUpreme Court.
pay attention to the good stuff here:Judge Sonia Sotomayor is listed as a member of the National Council of La Raza, a group that's promoted driver's licenses for illegal aliens, amnesty programs, and no immigration law enforcement by local and state police.
La Raza also has connections to groups that advocate the separation of several southwestern states from the rest of America.http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.p...w&pageId=99420Over the past two days, Sotomayor has been heavily criticized for her racially charged statement: "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

I live in Northern California and it's gotten bad here.
Americans tend to think of "fast food jobs" as being "beneath them", and thus all of the Hispanic kids work at all of the fast food restaurants. On one hand I feel uncomfortable when I'm in Burger King and I'm surrounded by people speaking Spanish, yet on the other hand it seems a brand new class of Americans are emerging that will have second class status.
It's funny because when I watch TV I see all white people. But when I go to the mall I'm seeing everything but white people - lots of Hispanic, Asians, and other dark skinned people. The demographics of the US is changing.Herschel Savage

Having learned Spanish in high school but not using it since I didn't know any Spanish speaking people in Hawaii in the 80's, I now struggle to communicate when visiting Andorra, Spain, and Costa Rica. It really could have come in handy when I was in Curacao and of course Mexico as well, but was surprised when I had trouble communicating when shopping in Miami.
I encourage my 18 year old daughter to get better at Spanish, but like a lot of Americans, especially in the South, it seems like it's beneath her although she won't admit it, which annoys me since she doesn't realize how many countries it would help her in, including the US.Last edited by JenniDahling; 06-08-2009, 02:17 PM.Comment

I actually lived in Daytona Beach(beachside) for almost a year. If you go around to the poor neighborhoods there and in Indiana they pretty much have the same percentage of Mexicans, at least it's that way here. I've seen illegal immigrants working for less than minimum wage around here.Comment

In NYC we have more Peurto Ricans living here than in Peurto Rico, and now the Dominican population is growning very fast here. In the past I dated a ton of spanish women and never learned any spanish. It can't hurt to learn...especially 80% of my building speaks spanish. I am making an effort to learn Japanese since my wifes parents speak no english.

Well they feel no need to learn english since they shop in their own naborhoods...and many jobs here will take someone who is bilingual over someone more qualified. So we as a society are making things easy for them...which is just fucking ridiculous. They are getting good jobs and also taking advantage of every social program available. Remember America means free money...to the rest of the world.
When my great grandparents came hear from Italy in 1910-20 from Italy they were treated like they had a disease, and had to work hard labor...and in sweat shops for pennies. Now you come here your in fucking paradise.

If you take into account that some southern US states like Florida where ruled by the Spanish crown untill the early 19Th century, I hardly find it surprising that so many people speak Spanish in the US, basically in America south of USA nearly all coutries speak Spanish,Brazil is the mayor exception.

Europeans laugh at the all too common American notion of "I'm an American, all I need to know is English".
I personally feel that all people should strive to learn as many languages as possible. The number of languages you can speak and the number of words you know is directly proportional to your ability to manifest nebulous ideas into something tangible.Comment

We, most of the american, already speak spanish. Are you talking about north america?

Isn't it common for most Europeans to speak 3 languages? If you were in College and you wanted to move to Switzerland and become a citizen you would have to go back to the 9th grade ...
