Have you ever heard about the Trickle-down effect? Maybe you have just adpoted the numbers, which others perceive as failing. Ex. ask a webmaster anno 1998 about conversions, and ask a webmaster anno 2009 about conversions - you will get 2 different answers what a good conversion rate is.

something as simple as doing watermarks right would increase type in 337%
the very first test we did generated 22% increase in type in.
If you triple your traffic results from type ins who gives a fuck if the ratio is 2x as bad as it was last year.
use branding bugs properly and that 2x ratio creep disappears and you go back to your original ratios.
Both those two together and you are making WAY MORE MONEY.

In order to put the proper watermark on videos that tube sites use you would have to properly watermark everything. The amount of sales affiliates miss because their promo has watermarks is amazingly high. sure you have to watermark everything, but two things you are ignoring
1. you don't have to use the same watermark for everything (affiliate content could be watermarked differently)
2. Done correctly (branding bugs) you increase retentions (i haven't been able to test this because i don't own a pay site, but since conversions increased because of a proper selling message using branding bugs, common sense says this message will convince people to keep renewing too), which balances out the loses from watermarks

Actually, you have that wrong. Unless you are only referring to the affiliate game.
Smaller companies, especially niche, can adapt more easily to change. Also do not have a huge overhead in staff, content, 100 sites, and so forth to keep up with. Smaller companies will survive, and the monoliths will either merge (i.e. get bigger), or go out of business.
However, for those who merge and do not invest in new technology or consumer tailored content will fail as well. They may pull out another few years, but no reinvestment, and they will be gone as well.
The days of buying a company just for their porn library so you can re-run it on your sites (assuming people have not seen it) is over. You need to invest in consumer driven content, and provide it to them in a delivery system they prefer at a cost they are willing to pay.
