Phil Specter gets 19 years to life

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Music producer Phil Spector was sentenced Friday to the maximum sentence of 19 years to life for the murder six years ago of actress Lana Clarkson.

Phil Spector's first murder trial in 2007 ended in a mistrial as jurors said they couldn't reach a verdict.

That means Spector, 69, would be 88 before he would be eligible for parole.

I don't know much about legal stuff...but how can they try you again for the same crime?

The first jury couldn't make up their minds right? That means some of them felt he was not guilty and others thought he was so it was a hung jury.

So these days the govt. can basically just keep trying you over and over until they finally get a jury that convicts you?

I think if your not found guilty you can't be charged... that would be double jeoperdy.

If it's a hung jury it's up to the prosecuter to establish the case again and try

These days? Um.... hung juries have always allowed the prosecution to re-try someone. This is not new. This goes back about 230 years. A hung jury is not a verdict.

Nah... I wasn't really talking about the exceptions... I was talking about how the FEDS will swoop in when the state is going to/or has lost. 99% of us lilly white suburbinites don't have a fucking clue how the deck is stacked. Crack almost always goes federal since they can basically throw away the key with an amount that any junkie could smoke in a single night.
