If you go with a solid reliable virtual host you should be able to start your TGP off with a smaller account. Of course a dedicated server is better since you dont have to worry about anyone else using your resources or slowing the server down. Also virtual hosts because there are more users and more things going on are a bit less reliable which is to be expected considering the price differences.
The problem is if you are just starting out you cant always justify the costs of a dedicated server and going for the cheapest dedicated server you often encounter similar downtime issues as a virtual account so simply getting a dedicated server isnt a great solution either.
Hence, if you are pressed for cash and have tight margins best to start off with a virtual account.
If you believe in your venture and have a bit more cash reserves you can investigate semi-dedicated or VPS (virtual private server) which is similar to dedicated except that the server is shared by a couple of people (2-5) as opposed to virtual (25-50+) additionally with VPS you can have specific amounts of resources set for your account so no one can steal your CPU or RAM since its allocated only to your slice.
Lastly, if you really have extra cash just go for a reliable dedicated server right off the bat.
So really it depends on what your budget is.
The overall best choice is VPS or semi-dedicated since it doesnt cost as much as a dedicated server and gives you a good value in terms of reliability vs cost.
Virtual if you have a very tight budget.
And dedicated but with a good provider if you really have the budget for it and you expect things to take off quickly.
Lastly, any company you go with you should consider the long term growth of your business. It would do you no good to start off with one company grow your site and then have to migrate it elsewhere because now you have to do a migration between hosts learn a new company and everything else. So you may end up paying a bit more to go with a better host off the bat but it will cost you less in the long run because you wont waste time with migrations and new techs that have to relearn your server.

liquidmoe explained things pretty clearly.
Whatever you opt for, the important thing with today's "TGPs" is that your site must load quickly. If trade "A" sends you a surfer but the site doesn't load fast enough, the surfer is not going to wait for it to finish - therefore your site will not grow.
If you are running a small to medium sized text TGP, I would say virtual should do you fine - but if you are planning a thumb site with a respectable amount of traffic, I would opt for a dedicated. You can get a nice box with a fair amount of bandwidth relatively inexpensive these days and then add bandwidth as you need.
The host should allow you to grow as you need to grow and hosthead will
