The Too Much Media Visual Knowledge Base!

We had shown a preview of this a few weeks ago and we would like to show everyone again as it has progressed some. It is still a work in progress but it is already a very valuable tool for anyone running or interested in knowing more about NATS

    http://roxy.toomuchmedia.com/product..._frameset.html

Please give us feedback on the site itself, the demos, and what you would like to see explained!

Hey John, would you care to explain how NATS works in the face of things like Zango and other toolbar code switchers and other such trickery?

I'm not familiar with "zango and other such trickery" so I really can't. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about things that take control of the browser and change things. The server just knows what it gets from the browser and thats all NATS knows also. It has no way of knowing what is going on at the browser end as far as that goes.

However, if someone does know a method to prevent spyware type apps from screwing with things we'd love to hear it and would be more than happy to impliment it. The problem is I don't think there is one.

John, maybe I should ask the question in a different way: Do sponsor sites using NATS hardcode the links into every page of the tour as the surfer moves forward, or it is dependant on "last time they entered the site they used this id"... either through cookies or a tracking DB?

NATS sponsors are instructed they should pass the code through each page of their tours via the query string. The code is also stored in a cookie and we also do IP tracking.

However all of this can be gone around by spyware if the spyware wants to. It can change the link code on a link before the surfer even hits NATS in the first place making all of this irrelevant. If NATS thinks that the code is something it shouldn't be the first time it sees it how is it to ever know it was changed?

Like I said, if there is a way to help we'd love to impliment it, but its doubtful.

Certainly the replacing codes might be difficult, but zango in particular works by opening a second browser to "replace the cookie". So if nats gets a hit from 111111 and 1 second later gets a hit for the same site for 222222, which one would be used?

That sounds a bit simplistic. I would think anyone who writes spyware would be a bit smarter than that. NATS uses whatever cookie was most recently set. I'll have our guys see if they can track this to see if its happening. I really doubt its that simple tho.

John, just one of the ways this apparently works. Outrightly replacing the affiliate code on the way in might be illegal (interference of a business transaction), but popping another window to change a cookie or otherwise misleading a tracking system might not have the same legal implications.

You might want to check the other thread on the issue, or get your programmers to have a look... heck, infect a PC with some of the spyware and get your guys to watch what happens

Thanks. It's something we'd love to do anything we can to prevent. Unfortunately IMO its a losing battle however something is certainly better than nothing. Even if it knocks out 5-10% of it, thats still 5-10% better.

Because NATS is more and more of a standard, it is also likely to be more and more of a target for these things. So looking at ways shrink this type of potential for fraud within your system will help many programs. Right now, 10% better would be a nice bottom line difference for many people.
