    Shap is the Lord. Words of Wisdom.

    I was having a very interesting discussion with DX last week, and he referrenced a thread (on another board) and while reading over it, this post stuck out to me. It's been a week, and it is so dead on about the majority of this industry, both adult and mainstream, it deserved a quote.

    Are you guys hobbyists or businessmen? To be honest I don't see too many posts that seem to be made by businessmen.

    Mpahlca has had more success than anyone here. I've had more success than anyone here. We both come here to try to share some wisdom and see if we can give back some knowledge to the community. Instead of picking our brains you argue or claim we're wrong. LOL You guys are funny. I'm glad it's working out so well for you guys and you know better than we do. Thank god we've already made our money because by the sounds of your posts Mpahlca and I are clueless and it's just a matter of days before we are done in this biz.

    Sorry for coming off like an arrogant asshole. I'll go back to what I do best which is worrying about my own business.
    My best guess is around 15% of the visible online communities are true businessmen and women.

          I think message boards tend to attract keyboard warriors and that style then becomes the norm. Discussions look and feel like arguments.

                  For the record, I have never met Shap at a show, nor talked to him personally. Also never promoted their program, even back in the days when I did affiliate marketing. Nor do I want, or need anything from him or his company.

                  That said, this was just a very memorable post, and I have had some interesting discussions since in reference. But yes, MD, it is a great post. That thread was something like 17 pages long, and that was last week. It was some discussion in regards to tubes if memory serves.

                      A lot of it is perception, 90% of the trolling is done by 10% of the posters, the rest of them are quiet and you rarely hear from them. I love how people alway say stuff like "ooh, $300, that's more than 99% of gfy makes in a month", when really they have no idea who is in gfy's member base other than the handful of people that call them names.

                          Well worth the read. Shap is a money maker whether or not people believe in his tactics.

                          The FACT is, that the majority of the GFY community are "hobbyists" trying to make a few extra dollars. Posting galleries, creating shitty blogs, TGPs, whatever. Just trying to get their slice of the large pie that is available online.

                          People like Shap have created this industry. They have evolved this industry into what it is today. Without these people who knows where adult would be? Possibly banished from the planet, who fucking knows.

                          It takes people with money, power and a vision to keep things like pornography alive. Without people willing to stand up and make a difference we are dead in the water. Tubes? Tube advertising? Who cares? In the end it is about the almighty dollar and unfortunately tubes will take from people's pocketbooks. It sucks to be on the "shit end of this stick". However one end of the stick doesn't have "shit" on it, so I suggest you observe and move in that direction or you are done. Kaput. C-ya.

                          Think outside of the box and ye shall succeed.

                              Keep in mind, and a point of clarification, I said VISIBLE industry. That means on board, forums, whatever. I know myself, from my days in the trenches many niche and fetish people who make good money are not on any of the boards. But they sure are knocking shit dead six ways from Sunday.

                              So I am mainly referring to who you see daily, or even occasionally, from the online industry.

                                                  There was a lot of good info from him, and some others, on the business side of things. It was worth the time to get through the 17 plus pages going over tubes, and business, and the industry.

                                                                          I have to give the dude props for keeping his cool when being attacked, even after providing in depth answers, and a break down on tubes, and the industry among other things. It was a nice read for a business thread, but filled with a lot of the same haters you see on most industry boards.

                                                                                          That attack is exactly why almost nobody of significant size posts anymore. Everything has to be about attacking people and bringing them down and flooding the threads with a negative message. It's not worth it for program owners to put themselves out there because there is always a negative pissed off webmaster lurking just waiting for them to post and then just attack and attack and attack and bring up everything they could whether it's old or new whether it's significant or insignificant.

                                                                                          I know I've cut back huge on my posts because it's almost impossible to get into a discussion without some of our business decisions being questioned. Even though they aren't part of the conversation they usually find a way of being brought in to try to make us look bad...

                                                                                              Hey (name removed). It took me a while to learn this but here is an important truth. NOBODY will look after you but you. Everybody is out for themselves and for every Toby there are 100 guys who are the opposite of Toby. And for all the good a guy like Toby has in his heart and in his intentions those 100 opposite Toby's are wreaking havoc.

                                                                                              That's not saying to go jump off a bridge and change your ethics and your ways. It's saying I think it's important to really be flexible in your ideas and what you are willing to do. I know you guys might not believe this but my core ideas and believes are very much in line with what Toby and yourself think. I hate doing anything less than 100% honest and in my mind ethical. I hate having cross sales. I really do. But I'm running a business. I have competitors that are willing to play a lot more aggressive than I am. If I'm not willing to bend in my ways a little then I'm not going to be competitive and in the long run I'll be out of the industry.

                                                                                              All that to say look out for what's best for you. Nobody has your back. When Ibill went down with all my money nobody had my back. If I hadn't been resourceful I would have had to start over from scratch. When push comes to shove everybody jumps ship and looks out for themselves. I try to learn from my mistakes. I thought I was doing the industry a favor when I would speak out against cross sales and not have them on my sites. The only favor I was doing was to my competitors. That's it. In the end I made that decision based on something that I personally believed it was wrong. Once I gave it a try realized it wasn't that bad at all and that my perception and lack of understanding cost me a shitload of money and alienated myself from a large part of the industry.

                                                                                                      I am not making an argument for, or against, Shap or DX's positions in the thread quotes. I am simply saying that Shap makes some good points in reference to the industry on the whole, and business in general. Nothing more. Nothing less. That thread takes a lot of twist and turns from O.P..

                                                                                                      I actually HAVE talked with DX on a personal level, and he is a very smart guy. As you can find out yourself HERE.

                                                                                                              Actually his numbers reflect our experience. I haven't been involved in the server setups and management so I don't know the exact numbers. I believe we are averaging 4 servers per 100k daily uniques. I'll confirm the numbers tomorrow.

                                                                                                              Also, not sure what other people have experienced but roughly every 150k daily uniques seems to be about 1 gig/s of bw.
                                                                                                              Someone else may correct me. I would guess $5000 a month would be the absolute minimum 150k of traffic would cost you. It costs us more than that. It all depends. For example BigBreastLovers is much more profitable for us than SexTube. It has 50k uniques, costs us less than $1000 to run and makes us more than $20k a month.
