No bad, uphill battle though, with people using tilt-shift and proper macro lenses to utilise DOF to their advantage..

Agreed 100%. My hope is that the combination of not just submitting the super cliche species, good framing of the pic, along with good focus and background will get me a spot.

I've got a very large book with gorgeous macrophoto's of tropical beetles and their faces. The closer up you see insects, the more alien they appear.

Most of the more common texas species are not nearly as grandiose as the African and Asian genera, but I will keep my eyes out, as they are most active in summertime.

Yep, I'm in Austin. If you look at the full size image, the individual wing scales look like a gorgeous mosaic.

Now I need to figure out what type of setup is going to really take my shots to the next level. My preliminary research indicates that to get a nice DSLR and superior macro lens, I'm gonna need to throw down around $2k at LEAST.

Looks like the Canon 5D Mark II and the 180mm 3.5 is the combination you should have. That will be $4150 for the pair.
