Should Teachers Carry Guns?

In the wake of school shootings in Wisconsin, Colorado and Pennsylvania during the last two weeks, a state legislator says he plans to introduce legislation that would allow teachers, principals, administrators and other school personnel to carry concealed weapons.

Lasee stressed that the measure would hinge on school staff members getting strict training on the use of the weapons. He also acknowledged he would have to work around a federal law that bans guns on school grounds.

School shootings are increasing, and something needs to be done. I am not sure teachers carrying a gun is the solution, but they should have metal detectors in all schools

It's a felony for anyone in Oklahoma other then a Police Officer to have gun on school property. My state issued conceal carry permit is null and void on school property. Rather then give teachers guns, why not hire more security or police to patrol the schools?

No and NO. In the school I went to a teacher slammed a student's head down on the desk, breaking out one of his front teeth because he was 'disrespecting' her. Would you want people like that to have guns?

Absolutely not! Shooting at another in a schoolroom or courtyard? Missing your target and wounding or killing another student or teacher? Or gang-bangers trying to whack a teacher on the back of the head in order to get the Gat! I can not understant why anyone would want to enter the teaching profession in todays climate. They should allow teachers to carry if they want. By making it illegal to have a firearm on any school grounds, crazies know good and well that the group in the school will be unarmed, so they can go right in uncontested. Who wants to go against a guy armed with a 45 with a taser?

Talk about treating the symptoms and not the disease. These kids aren't born any different from kids in other parts of the world. They get fucked up as they get older while unmonitered by their lazy parents. No kid brought up properly and responsibly shoots up their school. You have to fix the kids, not equivalently arm their teachers. Only in America is there a problem of guns and the solution is to get more guns. Then you'll have one fuckshit psycho teacher and some stupid kid will call him a dickhead and the teacher'll whip out his .45. 99% of kids don't shoot people in their schools, or ever dream of it. I bet it's not 100% for teachers either. All it would take is one psycho to let loose on the kids and the policy would be changed, in the same fumbling, reactionary fashion to which legislators have become tragically accustomed. Oh well, as long as they're "doing something about it" every one keeps their jobs.

No, might as well let the students carry the guns, they are the ones getting killed more than teachers.

Teachers have hardly any qualifications to teach much less keep a gun in the classroom. Imagine how many teachers would threaten students with it, or even shoot up the whole fucking school. Teacher conflicts turn into wild west shootouts, because any crazy fuck can be a teacher.

The house recently passed a bill that would require schools to have policies that would allow them without cause to perform random searches that could include strip searches.

Of course this is the same house that allowed Foley to carry on his pedo fetish for so long.

If they do that they'll need to carry guns to avoid people from killing them.

There's good post on this subject by a mighty smart fellow named Eugene Volokh (UCLA law professor and programming prodigy who earned his first million from software by the age of 15), on his board/blog The Volokh Conspiracy

Dr. Volokh's post is more a response to an article in the New York Times than a statement on whether teachers should carry guns, but he does address such as a possible deterrent:

"It is not clear what led [the shooter] to seek out a quiet country school in Lancaster County, Pa., but it is possible he chose it because he knew that it belonged to a trusting, insular community, where there would be no one to stop him from entering with a shotgun, a rifle and an automatic pistol."

What does this mean? If I'm not stopped from entering a school while heavily armed, is it likely because the community is "trusting" or "insular"? Would a more cynical community have said "Hey, wait a sec, you're carrying three guns into the school! We don't trust you!" Would a more worldly community have said "We're not like those hicks down the road -- we know that guns can actually kill people, and strangers who go heavily armed into a school are likely up to no good?"

My sense is that the only thing that could have stopped this murderer is someone else who's armed -- whether an armed security guard (something that even many non-trusting, non-insular schools don't have), an armed teacher, or someone else who had the requisite firepower (and willpower). Better yet would have been someone else who's armed but who's not in uniform, since even an armed but uniformed school guard could easily be surprised by the killer, who could murder him and then go inside with impunity. One can debate the merits of allowing teachers to be armed. But if one is going to talk about why there was "no one to stop [the killer] from entering with a shotgun, a rifle and an automatic pistol," that's the debate we should be having -- stressing the community's being "trusting" and "insular" as a possible cause seems to me a red herring.
