I webmaster sexranks.com it's a free counter system, It's still small and has a couple bugs to be ironed out but I have noticed approx, 70-80 some odd percent of poeple are 1024 or higher, and this is a smaple of a couple million uniques.

so I woudl have to say 1024 is a safe res to design to, but never forget that the other 20-30 percent are lower, so it all depends on how many visotrs you are willing to have visit your site and get a slightly fucked up looking page.

I design with 800X600 in mind, but I dont know how in the hell people work in that shit. Everytime I sit down at a machine that is 800X600 I feel like I am on an 8 year olds starter machine.

If pages are orentaited towards professional webmasters then fuck em' and just design for 1024 and make sure it's readable at higher resolutions,(ie. text not too small)... If they can't set their monitors to 1024+, get a monitor capable of doing a decent 1024+ or are too slack to have them at 1024 or higher then I don't see them as going to be majorly productive less they're spammers. [chill I know some of you will just be slack 800 evangalistic webmasters that like the clostraphobic feel of being jammed into a locker to do your designs... but most shouldn't be that fucking crazy]

As for =HUNGRYMAN=-s "gawd aweful 15" VGA monitors" implying that people using 15inch's are also the ones using 800x600 crap, most 17inch ones I've seen configured are for 800x600 crap.

Most 17 inch monitors that are cheap like dirt and nabbed up quick by customers often only have a crappy max. resolution of 1024x768 @ an eye burning 60 fucking hertz.

Get a quality monitor that runs the resolution you want at 75Hz or above... No flicker and less eyestrain... Cept from the perving zoom lean-in feature.. hehe :P

I run my 15inch @ 1280x1024 @ 85Hz.

To [Labret] if you mean that you also design in 800x600 ... how can I put this nicely... "YOU'RE FUCKING CRAZY" .. there that feels good

1. Design sites with the most comfortable working resolution you can.

2. Design with 800x600 in mind as target surfer resolution.

3. Make sure sites look and handle ok at 640, but don't give too much of a shit if there is the odd banner wrap... there's so little room on 640 for ads.

4. TEST AT ALL USER RESOLUTIONS... EVEN THE BIG ONES... Sometimes your text will get bigger on the lower resolutions and become UNREADABLY SMALL on higher resolutions.

5. Encourage your surfers to get an 800 resolution going by NOT fully catering to 640... How else will we get these slack bastards to upgrade, or GOD FORBID, change their screen resolutions.

6. If you REALLLLLLLLY wanna use the max screen space available WHY NOT do a test for screen resolution or browser pixel size... Then filter/re-direct the traffic to the pages designed to cater for those resolutions.

I do this resolution detection with the link below if you'd like to see it in action [couldn't be stuffed doing a browser pixel detect so have your browsers at the normal maxed size that users run at]

I haven't bothered changing the ads around much yet but you can see that on different resolutions you will have a different frames setup, or for 640 get kicked to a really bland page etc..

Notice the URL should show your running screen size.

[setup options put you in best page size from choice of 640, 800, 1024 or 1280 ... page sizes higher run with 1280 pages]

[ie. a 1000 screen size would show a url with 800 and a screen size of 1024->1279 would run with page of 1024 etc.]

1280x1024 on a 15"???? holy fuck captain squinty! gotta say invest in a fucking good monitor... until you've used a really good one you don't know the importance.. man im hooked on the 21" sony flatscreen i got at work.. i can't go back to my 17" heap at home and feel good about it..

(often have more than this running) ... Oh Yeh... And on my cd burner I have NEVER MADE A FRISBEE :P" (Have bus upclocked from 66 to 75 so Pentium is running at 225MHz and other stuff a lil' faster... Bet this still gives you nightmares though.. lol :D)]
