How come the US takes this gambling situation so politely?

    I mean

This kind of shit could not get through in Denmark without going through a public vote... and if it didn't people would go utterly insane.

So let me see if I get this right? With new laws going into affect over the last couple of weeks, I can now get arrested, dragged out of my house and tortured (to a degree) for playing online poker.

Yes, as opposed to the loud minority in the US, who are also a bunch of sheep.

It's true; why give people the choice to spend their hard-earned money how they choose? Why not collect it in tax revenue to fund more no-bid contracts to Haliburton and war profiteers? That sounds much more fair to me.

Most Americans only know what they see on TV. If Fox, ABC and CNN all blasted them for doing this type of stuff they would either complain to congress or change the channel.

You know whats funny, I watched a mini-video on CNN about this issue and they had a lawmaker from Alabama on there spewing the normal southern christian fundamentalist explanations for why this ban is good for america, U know bascially pushing religious moral views on the rest of the country. He even went as far as to associate online gambling with drug use... ok this is the same state that has banned sex toys even.......Its high time to start demanding these rediculous laws to be taken off the books. If we dont it will only get worse cause they are going to keep pushing the envelope even further and getting even MORE outta hand.

You dont prohibit stuff like this.. you REGULATE it... period.

Generally got to agree with you on that - tho cannot really comprehend the addiction aspect (suspect that is a small part of a bigger problem).

You are correct in that gaming licenses exist, not only in the US, but in most other countries - and gaming operations have varying degrees of external monitoring - even in offshore jurisdictions.

Gambling in Asia has been a custom for decades - gambling in EU countries is prob less, but no problemo. The biggest "apparent" gambling addiction problem is in the US. Dumping all ulterior motives the US govt may have in gaming (that begins and ends with money) - it appears there is "something" wrong or lacking when a society leans more towards "addiction" - can be drugs/gaming/"sexual"/whatever. Hell - I never heard of a "sex addiction" till visiting Florida years ago and asked if that mean't people just fuck more

We had the "war on drugs" and now have a quieter "war on gaming" which has been quietly being played out at the WTO for the last few years. Bottom line - these wars are not winable. They are problems from within.

Ummmm make it legal and thus you regualte it and you can collect tax revenue from it. As far as addiction well, alcohol is addicting and causes WORSE problems so let's ban that. Oh wait we did, it failed.

HMM Perhaps its because nothing happens when we speak up, you have to KNOW someone to get your voice heard by anyone that matters.

Our freedom to gamble has always been relegated to certain states. When the internet got around this issue, we knew it was a matter of time before they stopped it.

From what I read in the news
"U.S. Congress unexpectedly approved a bill early on Saturday that would make it illegal for banks and credit-card companies to make payments to online gambling sites." -CNN-

So the way I see people just need to find away to pay for online pocker with some kindo of prepaid card or credits. (IE 3rd party gateway billing)

It would just need to be a card that does not or is not used 100% just for online gambling.

It also does not say that the banks and credit-card companies can't take deposits/payments from online gambling sites.

I'm sure someone will find away around this... ;)

They don't bring in money for the gov't and I think that's the beef they have with it.

Funny considering the US administration constantly preaches about freedom and liberty, while stripping their citizens of those rights at the same time. If someone wants to smoke a joint, they should be free too. If someone wants to gamble THEIR OWN money, why not? That's what freedom is, waiving flags and reciting a pledge of alliegiance has nothing to do with freedom.

Many minors access porn sites. Let's ban those too.

Besides people including minors are NOT banned from playing online gambling games that don't involve real money. Now if gambling is addicitive do you really think your brain is going to sense the difference between playing to win $$$ or playing to win points or whatever? of course not. Whatever chemical reaction happens when you gamble for money that causes you to become addicted to it will still happen even if the money isn't real. So this "we are preventing addiction" line is pure bullshit.

..but I'm pretty sure the ONLINE GAMBLING wasn't the first thing you've had taken away if US is moving towards that direction... it's a LOT of small things the government would take away gradually, without you noticing the full picture until they've accomplished what they're set to do. That's what I would do if I wanted to create a police state/dictatorship.

You CAN'T do something like that overnight.
