my heart is breaking watching this...I am Pennsylvania Dutch. I turn on BBC news and there are Amish people sitting on the ground and I am taken back to see 'my people' on British tv at all and then I see it is a shooting in a group of largely gentle people. A situation like this is scary enough for 'normal' kids. I can't imagine what these kids are making of it..not to mention the invasion of the media into their lives nowComment

they said there was hostages and the shooter was shot dead. They dont' have security in a one room school house with 27 students. So, somebody could just walk in and start shooting. It could be an insider..they used guns for small game hunting, etc so it is possible somebody could get a gun. Also, at the base of it all they are still humans who have all the same internal issues and they can 'snap' too. There was a case a few years back of a murder in the community that made news. However, they are a pacifist community so it is very rare. They read newspapers and stuff so they know what goes on in the world even though they don't watch TV (some people have a radio these days but it is rare). So, who knows if things that have been in the news sparked something.Comment

Seriously though, what pisses me off almost as much is what fucking vultures the media and it's reporters are. I have it on in the other room while I'm working, and I can hear the reporters asking and reasking questions without any semblance of sensitivity, looking for as much gory information as they can possibly get. I understand they have a job to do, but I'd be curious to know the feelings of a reporter whose child was in that building, listening to other reporters do THEIR job.

It is also different than in other communities where there have been shootings because the Amish generally don't like having their picture taken. It just has to add to their horror to have all the copters above them. Atleast I haven't seen any groundlevel news cameras yet.
