You have to define "innocent people". Some of these groups are fighting to get people freed from death row by reintroducing new evidence discovered years later or other technical reasons - Usually because of DNA, which didn't exist at the time.

Just because DNA "found at the crime scene" doesn't match the accused it doesn't make him (or her) not guilty.

any sentence should be related to 2 things :
1- keeping the criminal off the society for the safety of them
2- deterrence so future criminals will think twice before they commit crimes

life sentence in prison covers section 1 . As for section 2 : as far as i've read in the U.S - death penalty didn't lower the murder cases in the states where death penalty is an optional sentence and in that case live sentence in prison will do just fine .

so the answer is no - death penalty is wrong .

I heard a reliable stat the other day that says it costs $60,000 to house an inmate for a year

            something to think about

I know of at least three cases up here where the DNA exonerated them and in at least one of those cases, another person was caught and convicted of the crime.

Regardless of whether or not they catch someone, if the DNA doesn't place them at the scene of the crime, then the question needs to be asked, "Would that person be convicted TODAY without that same DNA evidence."

While a lack of their DNA at the crime scene doesn't alone make the innocent, that same lack of DNA would be a powerful tool in a court of law and may have made the initial conviction impossible if the technology were available at the time.

It didn't because there are NO executions - 50 odd executions a year in the US - lol, who do you think you're going to scare with that? How about you go a bit on the east and see what is happening in China - how come the crime is low there? With the billions of poor and desperate people (despite their growing economy)? In the US you get sentenced to death you can reasonably expect to live for at least another 25 years.

exactly. "innocent" when used in the context of these arguments assumes "he didn't do it" - "innocent" in the proper legal context of the discussion more often than not, means "he held her down while she was raped and stabbed... but DNA now suggests might not have been the one who stabbed her"

i do not agree with it
stats prove that its not a detrant it actually increase the murder rate.
as with dna and innocents untill everyone no matter their bank account statment gets the same defence some people are more likely to get the death penelty then others.

Nope, you got me wrong, there's no way I want to live in a country like China, but every country in the World should treat their criminals the communist way:
                                  - gang rapists, child molesters, cold blooded murderers - all of them should be
tried, and if found guilty - shot dead.

There are only two types of countries in the World where crime is low:

                                  - rich countries with very equal distribution of income (which basically means very high taxes)

-countries that punish their criminals severely

If your country doesn't belong to the first category it better belong to the second, because the alternative is not pretty, trust me. And since I was born and grew up in a communist country there's one thing you should know - the crime was extremely low (especially the violent crime) - as fucked up as the communism was I can only pray that one day my kids will grow up in an equally safe environment.

In a different place or a different time, the death penalty could be the most efficient way of removing from society those who breaks its rules in the most extreme manner possible.

Unfortunately, here and now it costs more to inflict the death penalty than to condemn someone to life in prison. It doesn't apparently act as an additional deterrent or provide any other benefit, so I don't see any point in spending more of the taxpayers' money than is necessary.

of course i believe in the death penalty, it happens almost daily in the states. so of course its real.

i think the better question would be... do you AGREE with the death penalty.

i think the better question would be... do you AGREE with the death penalty.
That was the intended question, of course.
Now we've both stated the obvious.

I don't believe in the theory that supports it - that it acts as a deterrent... so until they can come up with a good reason for it, it shouldn't be an option.

I'm against death penalty. Funny all the motherfucking religious freaks in this planet are in favor of death penalty.

I definitely believe in it. Sometimes the punishment needs to match the crime. An eye for an eye.
