What this issue illustrates best is how superficial are most peoples' principles and beliefs and - as Joseph Goebels pointed out at Nuremberg - how easily led people are.
Of course when you are under threat it is easy to rationalize doing whatever it takes to get information which may lessen or remove that threat. But this is the exact same rationalization which we have rejected in the past when used by others. Nor need this be just about gathering information: a case could be made (again as in the past many have made it) that ill-treating prisoners - perhaps not taking prisoners at all - acts as a deterrent. You could extend both principles to non-war situations.
I care a great deal less about the nature of someone's principles, than that they actually have principles and are willing to stand by them in any circumstances. There are few things less edifying than realizing so many people have such little self-respect that reality proves over and over that in fact they have no principles of their own at all: that their thought processes, on everything from which TV programs to watch through to whether or not it is okay to torture prisoners, are so easily manipulated.Comment
